Yesterday’s big Arsenal news was that Mikel Arteta had agreed a contract extension, which runs until the end of season 2024/25.
The future is exiting for Arsenal under Arteta.
We have the youngster squad in the Premier League playing under the youngest manager in the league.
Arteta has the backing of the dressing room 100%. He is overseeing a class of hungry, young professionals that clearly buy into his methods. What is now important is we secure those young players down and we grow together as a club.
In 2024, the contracts of both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli expire.
We need to nail both players down to longer term deals this summer so that we can continue their growth.
In the not too distant past, we lost a lot of players for cheap (or nothing at all) by not negotiating new deals with them sooner.
The likes of Serge Gnabry and Aaron Ramsey were allowed to run their contracts down. We lost the former for very little after allowing him to have one year left on his contract and the later left for nothing.
New 5-year deals for both Saka and Gabriel will take them through until 2027. It will remove any concerns or worries next summer.
With Martin Odergaard, Gabriel (the other one), Aaron Ramsdale and Takehiro Tomiyasu having contracts until 2025 and Emile Smith Rowe, Ben White and Kieran Tierney until 2026, the bulk of our players are here for the future.
Saka and Gabriel are the only two who’s future can be questioned over the next 24 months.
It is now important that this summer we secure new deals for the paid, through to 2027. And then next summer do the same with Odergaard and Gabriel (the other one). The club has options to extend Ramsdale and Tomiyasu by a year so they are not a big as a concern.
It does feel under Edu that we are looking more to the future. Ensuring our best players do not enter the last 2 years of their contracts. We are more forward-thinking.
Hopefully where Arteta leads, Saka and Martinelli will follow.
The future is bright; the future is Arsenal.
