Tielemans In, Xhaka Out

It feels like Mikel Arteta is not far from having all the players he needs for the forthcoming season.

The impending acquisition of Oleksandr Zinchenko is another piece in the jigsaw as he continues to build a young, hungry, versatile team.

One name that we have been continually linked with since before the summer starts is Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.

Many probably would have expected the Belgium midfielder to be one of the first through the door. He seemed to be an ideal fit for Arsenal.

But he is still a Leicester player.

We have now recruited Fabio Vieira and Zinchenko to bolster our midfield options. Add in Mohamed Elneny’s new short term deal and we are fairly well set for central midfielders.

The above also does not take into account the likes of Albert Sambi Lokonga, Lucas Torreira, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Charlie Patino.

The middle two are surely expected to leave this summer (has Torreira sulked off to Italy?). But that would still leave us with 8 options for 3 positions.

Tielemans will not join unless we sell a midfielder. And the only logical options to sell would be Xhaka.

Vieira and Zinchenko are new signings so will not be going anywhere, whilst Odergaard is set to be named Arsenal captain (I might have missed the official announcement?)

That would leave Partey, Xhaka and Elneny.

Tielemans does not play deepest in a midfield 3 – for Leicester and Belgium he always has at least one (and often 2) in behind him. That leaves one man – Xhaka.

Xhaka turns 30 in September and has had a rollercoaster of a career with Arsenal.

The Swiss midfielder has looked on the verge of leaving us for the last 2 summers. But he is still with the club.

Last season, playing in a new role further forward, he excelled and was one of our most consistent players.

However Tielemans is clearly an upgrade – at least when it comes to attacking football.

But it is not as easy as “well lets get rid of Xhaka and sign Tielemans”.

For a start we would need to find a buyer for Xhaka – something which we have not been able to do for the last 2 summers. And it would have to be someone who he would want to join

Secondly Arteta would need to make the decision that he prefers Tielemans – and we know he likes what Xhaka brings to the football pitch.

And thirdly we need to decide to make ourselves a little more defensively fragile swapping Xhaka for Tielemans.

Xhaka and his family have now been in the UK for 6 years. His daughter was born in 2019 and will be starting nursery soon.

His daughter is key to all of this.

Three is a key development age. Language will be improving every day as they move from being a toddler to a pre-schooler.

I imagine his daughter is being bought up speaking fluent English. Therefore it would be a huge wrench to take her from England and move to Italy or France and begin developing language all over again.

Arteta also likes Xhaka. He would not have stood by him so long if he did not.

You only realise what Xhaka actually brings to the team when he does not play.

He is fantastic on the ball, excelling in both short and long passing.

There are not many players in the Premier League who are better at switching the play than him.

He bridges that gap between passing it round the defence and getting it into the forwards – often being the link man between defence and attack.

Tielemans does have similar qualities. But the right foot / left foot thing has to also be taken into account. It might not seem huge but it is.

Would Arteta think that Tielemans is an upgrade on Xhaka? I am not sure.

Xhaka is also more defensive than Tielemans. It is a key factor.

If Arteta wants to g more attacking, he has already recruited a man in Vieira to do that. We will see Vieira and Odergaard take the field together with just Partey behind a many times next season.

But to that ying you need Xhaka’s yang.

Xhaka is that more defensive option that will either start in tougher games – or be bought on to see a game out.

Zinchenko can play this role, but if he is required at left back it leaves only Elneny as the more defensive option.

There is still a cloud over Partey, who has had his injury problems in recent years. Xhaka’s defensive contribution can not be discounted.

Tielemens simply does not have the defensive output of Xhaka.

Without this turning into a debate between Tielemans and Xhaka (I actually think Tielemans is the better player), it is clear and obvious that we can only buy if we sell. And I just do not think we will sell Xhaka.

More likely is that we buy a winger that can also “play inside”.

Someone like Lucas Paquetá of Lyon.

The Brazilian would be cover and competition for Bukayo Saka on the right hand side, but can also drop inside to provide a more attacking option if needed.

For now, we just do not need another central midfielder.

It will only be Tielemans In if it is also Xhaka Out.

Zinchenko watches on as Hale End trio score

Morning all.

We played last night.  Won 3-1.

Now idea what the performance was like. I am not staying up until 12:30am to watch a friendly.

Goals were scored by Martinelli, Nketiah and Nelson, if that matters.

The last of those 3 is an interesting one.

Arsenal need a winger to provide cover to Saka this season (Pepe is not up for it). Nelson has had a few chances and looked on the verge of stepping up following his loan spell at 1899 Hoffenheim.

That was now 3 years ago and he has not really kicked on since.

He was not particularly great at Feyenoord last season so you feel it is time for him to move on.

At 22-years-old, he is at that age where he should have progressed further in his career by now, but is still young enough to have a good career.

I do not think he is the solution for us.

Oleksandr Zinchenko will probably be unveiled today.

He flew from Texas to Florida to join up with the Arsenal squad and was pictured at the game alongside Edu.

I might write some more detailed words on him when I have the time (and energy).

We have one more friendly in America to go against Chelsea. Then it is fly back to London, a works intensive training, before a final friendly at the Emirates against Sevilla.

Crazy that the season starts in 15 days time!

Enjoy your Thursday.

What does the future hold for Arsenal youngsters? (Part II)

In this series, we take a look at where we expect the batch of Hale End starlets to end up this season. Part one discussed Charlie Patino, Karl Hein & Miguel Azeez and is available here.

Brooke Norton-Cuffy

The surprise inclusion in Arsenal’s US tour squad was defender Reuell Walters.

You would have thought if the club were taking an extra right back, it would be Norton-Cuffy. The only logical explanation is Walters is going as central defensive cover rather than as a full-back.

Norton-Cuffy is an extremely exciting young man.

I recently blogged that it was his talent that was keeping Cedric Soares at the club. He could have a huge future at Arsenal but is still very much a rough diamond.

He spent the second half of last season on loan in League One at Lincoln City. He looked physically and technically ready to play at a high level.

What he now needs is to get a full season of senior football under his belt.

My hope was that following the departure of Djed Spence, Nottingham Forest would look at Norton-Cuffy as a like-for-like replacement. They opted to sign Neco Williams instead.

Norton-Cuffy was also the reason why I we were never in the race for Spence – why spend £20million when we have someone with the same talent and without the ego in the squad?

Norton-Cuffy is read to play a full season in the Championship. He could even be ready to play for a lower Premier League team.

I can definitely see him starting week in week out for Crystal Palace. Loan to Crystal Palace

Matt Smith

Matt Smith will one day become a footballing quiz question.

“In 2020, what player won an FA Cup winners medal with Arsenal but would never actually play a game for the club?”

Harlow born Smith got his chance at the club during Covid.

He was called up to train with the first team and would be on the bench for every game following the return of football after its suspension. This would include the FA Cup victory. Smith would never play a minute.

Smith then spent the first half of the 2020/21 season on loan at Swindon Town in League One before joining Charlton in the same division for the second half of the season.

Last year he played 43 league games for Doncaster Rovers – also in League One. Doncaster were relegated.

Smith turns 22 in October and with so many younger, more talented midfielders at Arsenal, his time at the club is probably up. SELL.

Salah-Eddine Oulad ‘m Hand

Back in March, Jack Wilshere was asked who the most exciting academy graduates were at Halen End.

The first name he mentioned was Charlie Patino; Not a surprise considering the pair have been compared.

He then went on to say “there are other players out there, there’s a boy called Salah who is really good coming through. There’s a lot of players in that group who are technically very, very good.”

Wilshere was talking about the box-to-box midfielder Salah-Eddine Oulad M’Hand, who had been lighting up Arsenal’s U23 side last season.

The Dutch youth international, 18, moved to North London in 2020, after he was released by Feyenoord

He suffered a fractured ankle shortly after joining the club which would see him be ruled out for a year.

On his return he quickly established himself as one of the teams most important players and was included in the senior squad for the League Cup clash against Leeds United.

Arteta has recently praised his attitude in training and he is clearly someone that the club think highly of.

Having missed nearly a year of football, I think he will remain at the club for the next 12 months. He will continue to star in the PL2 and EFL Trophy, as well as get a run out in League Cup and Europa League games.

With Charlie Patino expected to spend more time in and around the senior squad, he will become the main man of the PL2 team

There will be questions about whether he has the physical attributes to make it as a Premier League footballer. But with his hard work and natural technique he certainly has a chance. PL2
