Could 17 senior players really leave Arsenal this summer?

Bernd Leno has been linked away from the club this summer.

The German keeper has only been at Arsenal for 3 years, but has reportedly indicated he will not like to extend his stay in London beyond his current contract.

The result is Arsenal might look to cash in this summer before his value plummets next.

Arsenal’s only other senior keeper Rúnar Alex Rúnarsson could also see his stay at Arsenal be extremely short.

The Icelandic keeper was a surprise signing last summer and looked extremely amateurish in his handful of Europa League games. Arsenal will surely look to move in on – either permanently or loan – as they potentially pursue two new keepers.

Hector Bellerin has been a great servant to the club since joining the academy a decade ago. But it feels like a natural time for Arsenal and the Cockney-Spaniard to part ways.

A move could reignite his stagnating career and provide key funds for Arsenal to buy someone better.

Also potentially out the door is Calum Chambers

Chambers came into the first team for a bit as Arteta rotated him in against teams who dominated for corners. He performed well.

But with Arsenal on the look out for a new first choice right back and right sided centre half, time might have finally come for Chambers to seek permeant first team football elsewhere.

Moving into centre back,  David Luiz has already left the club. And reports are that William Saliba might find himself playing for someone other than Arsenal next year.

Signed with great fanfare 2 summers ago, Saliba spent his first year with the club on loan at St Etienne. Last year he joined Nice for the 2nd half of the season.

There is clearly something there that those at Arsenal and France do not like = he does not even get called up to his countries U21 team.

The only question seems to be whether Saliba will leave Arsenal on loan or permanently?

With a new centre back on the horizon, Konstantinos Mavropanos will also likely leave the club.

The Greek defender looked good in a handful of performances a couple of years ago but has since spent a lot of time out injured.

Last year he joined VfB Stuttgart on loan, and a decent offer around £10million will probably be enough for Arsenal to part ways with him.

Sead Kolasinac is still an Arsenal player.

The Bosnian left back joined Schalke on loan in January, but the deal was not made permanent following their relegation.

Arsenal are in the market for a back-up to Kieran Tierney. Kolasinac will have plenty of admirers in the Bundesliga.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles began the season in Gareth Southgate’s England squad. He ended it missing out on selection and getting relegated with WBA.

His performances for WBA showed he was Premier League class, but probably not the level Arsenal need. Will generate good funds.

Fellow Englishman Joe Willock performed well for Newcastle with 8 goals in a short loan spell. Arsenal might be tempted to keep him, but a bid in excess of £25million would probably be enough for the club to cash in.

On loan last season, Lucas Torreira has been linked with a move to Lazio.

He has never really settled in England and also struggled to make an impact with Atletico Madrid last season. Arsenal will be lucky to recoup half of the £23million they spent on the Uruguayan 3 seasons ago.

Matteo Guendouzi is another who went out on loan and will unlikely return to the first team.

Issues at L’Orient, Arsenal and Hertha Berlin highlight the problem is not just “Mikel Arteta’s”.

Guendouzi risks wasting his talent as trouble continues to follow him around.

Like Bellerin, long term servant Granit Xhaka could also find his Arsenal journey come to an end with reports that Jose Mourinho fancies him at Roma.

Arteta is clearly looking to rebuild the central midfield, and targeting the likes of Yves Bissouma and Sambi Lokonga, it is clear power and pace is what he wants. Xhaka just does not fit the bill.

Willian signed a 3-year-deal with Arsenal last summer but has reportedly told the club he wants to leave – with the MLS being a likely destination. No one will be sad to see him go.

Reiss Nelson is someone who has struggled to make the transition from talented youth product to senior star.

When you compare his trajectory to Bukayo Saka, one he kicked on and the other has not.

You feel Nelson has reached his peak, and that is not good enough for Arsenal.

Fellow English youth team player Eddie Nketiah might also find his time at Arsenal is over – with him moving aside to allow the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Florian Balogun to come through.

Nketiah is now 22 and like with so many of the English contingent, would raise a decent amount of money.

Finally, with a year left on his contract, Alexandre Lacazette might leave Arsenal this summer.

Various managers have tried and failed to shoehorn Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang into the same time. Selling Lacazette this summer and reinvesting his funds in some creativity feels an intelligent move.

Arsenal would then have Aubameyang down the middle, backed up by Martinelli and Balogun.

17 players would be huge in terms of squad turnover. But we know last season Arsenal had an inflated squad.

Shifting all 17 would leave Arsenal with just 13 senior players.

It would probably lead to Arsenal needing to make 9 new senior signings, and then promote a couple of youth players to the first team.

Do not worry about lack of transfer movement – it is not just your club have a quiet start to the summer

Morning all.

There really is not much happening at Arsenal at the moment.

The usual ITK’s on social media craving for attention with their fake transfer links. The usual characters who have been at it year after year. You would think they would have got bored / grown up by now.

They must have a cog missing in their brain to still be craving the attention, pretending to speak to agents, etc. Some of them have been at it for years.

Although just as crazy are those that follow them, that think these people know what they are talking about.

It is not just quiet at The Arsenal, but across domestic football.

Bar Emiliano Buendía to Aston Villa and Ibrahima Konaté to Liverpool, there has been no other transfer movement of note.

It is interesting when you venture beyond “Arsenal Twitter” you begin to realise every club has the same complaints.

I see fans of Arsenal, Newcastle, Everton and more moaning that they have not yet signed a player. They act like everyone else has already done a lot of business. The truth is every Premier League club is currently in the same boat, with very little happening.

So basically if you are a fan of Arsenal (or of another club that have stumbled across this blog), do not get your knickers in a twist. No one has really done any business yet.

The Euros is bubbling on.

Scotland have celebrated a 0-0 draw like they had won the thing.

1 point and 0 goals from the first two games. Not sure why their fans are being so boastful? First international tournament for 23 years and they could end up limping out without scoring.

Their fans will point to their “small population” but compare them to what Wales did in 2016. What Iceland have done. And Northern Ireland.

I guess celebrating a 0-0 draw shows why they have struggled for so long at international level.

Spurs still do not have a manager. Still a laughing stock.

Enjoy your week.

Tottenham recruitment struggles shows why Arsenal are right to stick with Arteta

There are simply not many good coaches on the market at the moment.

Yes, there is Antonio Conte who recently walked out on Inter Milan due to disagreements he had with the club’s board over transfers for next season. But beyond him, there is not many.

This is highlighted by the fact that Real Madrid went for Carlo Ancelotti – a manager past his best who they sacked 6 years ago.

You then look at Tottenham.

They are becoming a running joke with how many managers they have approached, and been turned down by (or turned down themselves). The most recent one is Gennaro Gattuso.

Spurs have been snubbed by Julian Nagelsmann, who understandably preferred Bayern Munich. Brendan Rodgers preferred to stay at Leicester City, whilst Erik Ten Hag decided to remain at Ajax for another year. Whilst they made a  tentative  approach for the return of Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham spoke to Conte, but turned it down following his demands. Whilst a move for Paulo Fonseca broke down after Daniel Levy et al changed their mind on him.

What is embarrassing for Spurs is every move they make in the manager market seems to be played out publicly.

When Arsene Wenger left Arsenal, the senior leadership team came up with a dozen potential replacements. This is not unusual.

Some turned the opportunity to chat further about the job down straight away. Others came in for a formal chat. This is normal when recruiting for a high level position regardless of industry.

But it was all very private.

Tottenham’s public pursuit has made them a laughing stock.

When you look at the candidates they have approached, are any of those actually available (ie excluding Nagelsmann, Ten Hag and Rodgers) better candidates than Arteta?

Conte is the only outstanding candidate.

Tottenham are not the only side to have struggled to recruit a new manager.

As mentioned, Madrid have gone backwards to get Ancelotti, whilst Celtic, Everton and Crystal Palace have all struggled.

Celtic took over 100 days to appoint Neil Lennon’s replacement, and ended up with an unknown Australian.

Meanwhile Everton’s pursuit is only slightly less embarrassing than Tottenham.

There had reportedly been talks with Nuno Espirito Santo before settling recently on Rafa Benitez. Their fans have revolted.

Benitez has not done anything relevant in football since his spell at Napoli.

He followed that up with being sacked after 25 games with Real Madrid and being relegated with Newcastle and has since spent a couple of years in China.

The fact he is currently top of Everton’s list shows how few good candidates there are.

And it filters down.

Palace are also struggling to recruit.

You almost feel they need Spurs and Everton to make their decisions so they can scope up who is left. Or are they waiting for England to crash out of the Euros to get Gareth Southgate?

What is clear is that Antonio Conte is the only truly top coach currently on the market. And he has had a falling out with Inter over transfer funds and Spurs rejected him because they could not meet his demands.

You have to wonder what he is expecting from clubs considering the Covid world we live in.

Arteta is going no where. And if he was, I would be hugely concerned as to the quality of manager that replaces him.

In the meantime, we can all keep laughing at Spurs.
