Szczesny, Chiesa, McKennie & Rugani – Should Arsenal target any of the “Juventus 8”

Over the weekend Juventus made it public that “eight first-team players” had been told to “find new clubs” by manager Thiago Motta.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was on the list, as was Federico Chiesa. Also named were  Weston McKennie, Arthur Melo, Mattia De Sciglio, Daniele Rugani, Filip Kostic and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia.

This news has led to fans from every Premier League club to speculate who they should sign (with some fans having ideas above their station on who their team might be able to attract!).

Wojciech Szczesny

We were linked with our former first choice goalkeeper towards the end of last season.

It is clear and obvious that we need a new keeper if Aaron Ramsdale leaves. Although I would not be surprised to see England’s number 2 remaining as Arsenal number 2 for another season.

Szczesny would give Mikel Arteta an experienced back up for Ramsdale. The Pole is still a high quality keeper and was Juventus’ first choice last summer.

Whether he wants to be 2nd choice for the tail-end of his career puts a question mark over the deal.

Now 34-years-old, he still has plenty to give. It is whether he would prefer being 2nd choice in the luxurious settings of London Colney, or be first choice training in a portacabin with cold showers at somewhere like West Ham.

Federico Chiesa

Probably the biggest name on the list, at 26-years-old Federico Chiesa should be entering his peak. Instead he finds himself cast aside from the club that has spent over £50m on him as a 21-year-old.

I have never been a huge fan of Chiesa. For me he is a player who clearly had plenty of technical ability, but has never got the figures to back up the hype.

The son of legend Enrico Chiesa, he has never scored more than 10 league goals in a season. He also has a horrendous injury record.

Chiesa tore his cruciate ligament back in 2022 and has never really recovered. Since then he has continued to pick up minor muscle injuries. He gets fit for 5 or 6 games, then misses 2 or 3. and it has been that way for the last two seasons.

He reminds me a lot of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the sense that he had a lot of hype as a youngster, never really reached the heights expected, has had a career hampered by injuries but is still hyped up by fans.

We should stay well clear of Chiesa.

Weston McKennie

Leeds United signed the American on-loan in 2023. I was surprised to see that he was still only 25-years-old.

2 or 3 years, Weston McKennie would have looked a great fit for Mikel Arteta’s team – A versatile box-to-box midfielder who can also play deeper and at fullback, we would have been a perfect squad player back in 2022. But 2024 Arsenal demands better players.

I would not be surprised to see him join a Premier League club. He is more suited to someone like Fulham than Arsenal.

Arthur Melo

One of the worst loan signings in Premier League history, Arthur Melo joined Liverpool in 2022 and failed to play a single league game – and just 13 minutes in total.

The Scousers got all giddy when they secured the Brazilian, and some Arsenal fans made noise about how we should have dumped Granit Xhaka for him. But the writing was already on the cards with his injury record.

Arthur Melo had struggled for consistent game time for Barcelona and Juventus, so it was not a surprise to me when he broke down after playing his first game for Liverpool.

Now 27, Arthur Melo screams out “heading to the Saudi Pro League”.

Mattia De Sciglio

Another on this list who has had a chequered injury record, the now 31-year-old right back will be a solid acquisition for someone as a squad fullback. That someone is just not Arsenal.

We are well set at both right back and left back. We do not need another one! I can see him ending up at Manchester United who could do with his versatility and cover on both flanks.

Daniele Rugani

Still only 30-years-old, we were heavily linked with Daniele Rugani back in 2019. Despite reportedly having “agreed terms” with us, the Italian remained at Juventus.

Rugani was once considered one of the most promising young Italian players of his generation, but he has never really kicked on to show any sort of consistency at a high level. Just 7 caps for Italy sums his career up.

Having signed Riccardo Calafiori, we are not in the market for another defender. Rugani looks Ajax bound,

Filip Kostic

The Serbian is a solid left winger / wing back in the Ivan Perisic role. You know you are getting someone that works hard and puts lots of balls into the box, but will not be a superstar.

Now 31, he would not improve Arsenal’s squad in any shape or form so this one would be a non-starter.

A knee injury cut short his Euro’s, so an injury question mark hangs over him. Due to this I can see a loan deal – with the likes of Crystal Palace and various Turkish clubs already linked.

Hans Nicolussi Caviglia

A victim of Juventus’ (and other top Italian clubs) hoarding and loaning out of young talent, Hans Nicolussi Caviglia finds himself having played just 13 games for his boyhood club at 24-years-old.

Once a promising young midfielder, Nicolussi Caviglia has had 4 unspectacular loan deals all within Italy. Expect him to stay in the country of his birth. Probably on loan again.

A lot of fans will be calling on Arteta to make a move for Federico Chiesa to act as cover for Bukayo Saka. But his injury record is a huge red flag.

Wojciech Szczesny is the one man on the list that I can see us signing. He would certainly fit in as our 2nd choice keeper and is a personality the club knows well (although this could be a bad thing as well!!).

It will all come down to whether Ramsdale is content remaining as 2nd choice, and whether Szczesny is happy becoming second choice.

My gut is unless anyone on the 8 man Juventus exodus list was already on our transfer target list, we will not be dropping our targets to recruit any of them.

Enjoy your Tuesday.

The boys are back in town!

With two weeks to go until the first game of the season, everyone is back at training!

Yesterday the club posted up images of Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Aaron Ramsdale back in training. These followed an announcement that David Raya and William Saliba were also back.

That means all the boys are back ahead of the friendly against Bayern Leverkusen.

I do not actually expect any of them to be involved in Wednesday’s friendly. They would have only had a handful of days training before then. However the majority of players keep themselves in better nick than yesteryear so I Would not be surprised to see them play on Saturday, and be in contention for the Wolves game in a week.

There is a really good interview with Jack Wilshere on the website. He goes into his hopes for the U18s this season, and how talented 16 year olds can quickly change the landscape and plans of his team.

In news abroad, Juventus have publicly announced that 8 players are free to leave the club. This will likely result in the being available at a hugely reduced price. Names include Federico Chiesa and Wojciech Szczesny.

This news will change many clubs transfer plans. Later this week I might write a blog over which of 8 Arsenal should consider signing, and which ones we should avoid.

Ignore the noise about Mikel Merino transfer concerns. This story is all about discussions held within Arsenal meeting rooms around his age. These are perfectly normal discussions management have and you would actually be worried if they did not talk about this.

A quick dive into the article which was first published by clickbait football.london shows that it is not an inside source that has leaked this, and it is more journalist speculation. No sources mentioned around this matter.

What started as a single line about concerns of his age has turned into a huge “Arsenal might miss out” headline. It just shows how made up stories from glorified blogs can make it through to national news with clickbait headlines!

What is sad is the “Chief Arsenal Writer” used to be a very good blogger with a fantastic analysis. Now he just sits their pumping out clickbait material for the highest bidder (yes, we all have bills to pay!).

This is a warning for many aspiring journalists – the majority of sports journalism is about writing bullshit, not writing insightful analytical or thought provoking pieces. Media outlets just want a load of low paid graduates pumping out 10 articles a day based on Twitter posts.

Everything else is fairly quiet this Monday morning. It is still sunny in Essex, so time to do some washing and grab some breakfast!

Enjoy your day!

What next for The Arsenal in the transfer market?

With Riccardo Calafiori in the door as our first major signing, and Emile Smith Rowe joining Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares in departing the club, but business can we expect next for The Arsenal?

Mikel Merino

Next through the door is likely to be Real Sociedad’s midfielder Mikel Merino.

Whilst the Spanish midfielder might not be the a big name, or come with a big price tag, that some are demanding, he is the player that Mikel Arteta wants.

If you want to understand the impact Merino can have, read our recent blog on him.

That blog finishes with a comparison to Mateo Kovacic – The Croat joined Man City for just £25m last summer and provided Pep Guardiola with an experienced, versatile option. Kovacic was able to cover Rodri as the sole defensive midfielder, and is an option to play further forward when Pep wants to play a little more defensive. Merino does the same for Declan Rice and Arteta.

Reiss Nelson to leave on loan

Having seen Emile Smith Rowe depart, Arsenal will be working on another Hale End exit – Reiss Nelson.

Nelson has never really kicked on from being an exciting young talent.

Just as Nelson was breaking through to the Arsenal first team squad, a younger, more exciting player burst onto the scene – Bukayo Saka. Nelson quickly found himself unable to compete with his teammate, and his game time quickly became limited.

Nelson turns 25 this year. I would be surprised if anyone would offer the £20million Arsenal are reportedly demanding considering his lack of top level game time. Expect him to go on loan with an option to sign him for £20m in the future.

If he performs on-loan over the next 12 months, Arsenal will expect to bank that £20m. If he struggles, his value will plummet dramatically as he will only have a year left on his contract.

Eddie Nketiah to depart

The third Hale End youngster that is likely to depart this summer is Eddie Nketiah.

Like Nelson, Nketiah has never really kicked on from talented youngster. However, he has shown enough that he can do a job for a mid-lower top flight team in England, or abroad.

Nketiah’s price will be driven up due to the lack of strikers in world football right now. I would not be surprised to see him depart for more than what we sold Smith Rowe for.

Jakub Kiwior the loser in the Calafiori deal

A consequence of Calafiori’s recruitment is that it pushes Kiwior down one more in the pecking order.

At centre back, Arteta has Saliba, Gabriel, White, Calafiori, Timber, Tomiyasu and Kiwior as options, with Olexsandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney as additional left backs.

Kiwior at best is now 3rd choice in the left centreback position, and 6th choice left back. I would expect him to move to an Italian club soon. An example of signing someone (Calafiori) who is an upgrade on an existing squad plauer.

Kieran Tierney future a headache

Arsenal would have hoped that Tierney would have a solid loan spell with Real Sociedad that would result in someone coming in for him. Instead his injury issues continued.

3 separate injuries led him to start just 14 La Liga games in 2023/24, and yet another hamstring injury has led him to miss out on our pre-season tour to the USA.

At best, Arsenal will hope for a loan deal with an option to sign him in 12-months. I actually would not be surprised if we receive little to no interest for the Scotsman, and he remains at Arsenal until January not playing.

Aaron Ramsdale to remain? Or leave for Man City?

I am going to go out on a limb and predict that Aaron Ramsdale will remain at Arsenal.

Very few teams would be willing to pay what we want for Ramsdale, and with a contract through to 2027 (if we take up the year extension), we will be in no rush to sell him. The only way I can see him departing is on loan.

Keep an eye on Manchester City though – if Ederson does end up going to Saudi Arabia, they might decide to go for Ramsdale as a stop-gap ahead of scouting and recruiting a long term replacement for the Brazilian – think Claudio Bravo signing a year before Ederson.

A new attacker

Our incomings will be rounded off by one new attacker. It might be a striker. It might be a winger.

Kai Havertz finished last season in very good form. Any forward that comes in will need be a better option than Germany’s first choice striker.

Gabriel Jesus meanwhile has looked sharp in pre-season; could we go into 2024/25 with Havertz and Jesus a our two striker options?

Jesus also provides quality cover on both wings, which leaves Arteta with a choice make.

He signs someone better than Havertz, which relegates Jesus to 3rd choice striker, but also 2nd choice on both wings (behind Martinelli and Saka). Or he signs a top winger, and Jesus remains as Havertz’s cover and competition, further backed up by Martinelli, Trossard and the new winger if he can play in the middle.

My preference would be Nico Williams, who then becomes a starter on the left. There would be more than enough games for the Spaniard, Martinelli and Saka. Trossard then provides further cover.

That would leave us with Havertz and Jesus, backed up by those wide forwards that can play in the middle.

The only area were it is not clear what are plans are is in the forward positions.

It is not clear whether we will go for an out and out striker (or who?), or opt for a wider forward. Could it be Victor Oshmein? Viktor Gyökeres? Ivan Toney? Or perhaps Nico Williams? Or will end up with someone that we have not even been linked with yet?

The season does not start until 17 August, and the transfer window shuts at the end of the month. Still plenty of time for deals to be done.
