The transfer window is open, and Arsenal have signed….

precisely no one. Nowt. Zilch. Nada. Sweet FA. There is nothing happening. The joke used to go that our trophy cabinet was duty due to lack of trophies, well now it is the interview room that needs a good clean, as it seems unlikely that we are about to sign anyone any time soon.

But is this a problem? There is, after all, a World Cup going on, and we all know no big business happens before – or during – a World Cup. I jest of course. You only have to look at what our rivals have already done:

Cesc Fabregas – Barcelona to Chelsea – £30m
Rickie Lambert – Southampton to Liverpool – £4m
Emre Can – Bayer Leverkuson to Liverpool – £10m
Fernando – Porto to Manchester City – £12m
Ander Herrera – Athletic Bilbao to Manchester United – £29m
Luke Shaw – Southampton to Manchester United – £27m

Our rivals have strengthened, meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has been frolicking on the beach with scantly clad babes.

On the other hand, Arsene Wenger has been in Brazil, commentating on the World Cup. Those who say this shows he is disconnected are misguided. By being in Brazil, albeit in a working capacity, it means he is able to watch a lot of targets himself in the stadium, under the guise of commentating, without a fuss being made of him scouting.

He is also able to speak to scouts and families of potential targets. It has already been rumoured that he has had breakfast / lunch / dinner with James Rodriguez, Mario Balotelli and Alexis Sanchez, or their families, or their representatives, or someone who vaguely knows them and wanted free food.

Also, it is a bit hard buying a player who is still playing in the World Cup. Let’s look at that list of players our rivals have signed again…

Cesc Fabregas – Spain knocked out after 2 games
Rickie Lambert – England knocked out after 2 games, Lambert played 3 minutes
Emre Can – Not in German squad
Fernando – Not in Brazil squad
Ander Herrera – Not in Spain squad
Luke Shaw – £27m…lol? Is that what you have to pay to wrap a deal up early

The fact is, when Arsene Wenger said big deals do not happen before the World Cup, he was correct. Bar Cesc Fabregas, no other transfer has been for big cash and involved two big clubs. And the fact Cesc wanted to leave, and Barca to sell, meant it was a fairly easy deal to complete.

None of the above deals would have taken much work. All players wanted to leave, all players took a step from the club they played for, and in many cases, the buying club has over paid to secure their man early.

Call me what you want, but I would rather we wanted for the right player, than went and secured average, overpriced players just so that we could have got a deal done early.

Looking at the players on that list, the only one I would have considered were I Arsene Wenger would have been Cesc Fabregas. And you feel that with Ozil, Cazorla, Ramsey, Wilshere and Rosicky, Wenger made the correct decision. He let his head rule his heart, something fans struggle to do.

Yes, reported targets Serge Aurier and Mario Balotelli are now out of the World Cup, and they could be deals we could get done, but it is clear that Arsene Wenger is unsure on either. It is also clear in the fact that the media have linked us to 50 players since the season was over that their might not be any truth in our interest in these.

A final point to consider is the players who are still at the World Cup. Or a single player. Alexis Sanchez. Barcelona want rid. Arsenal want him. He wants Arsenal. According to reports. With Chile only just being knocked out, a deal could take a while to bash out. If interest is real, we may well see a similar scenario to the Ozil deal from Madrid, where Arsenal have a promise, on the basis that they get their target.

In Madrid’s case, it was clear that, having signed Isco, once Bale would join, either Ozil or Di Maria would be available. Barcelona are the same. Once they have secured Luis Suarez, Sanchez will almost certainly be off. So this deal might run.

Some good news on July 1st is that it is the day contracts run out. It is the day Nicklas Bendtner leaves us. If that is not something to celebrate, I do not know what is.

Keep calm. Carry on. The transfers will happen.

Smalling for Vermaelen – Don’t write it off

So this mornings transfer news has all been about Thomas Vermaelen, and that he has agreed terms with Manchester United. The obvious immediate response from most Arsenal fans is ‘great, selling another captain, losing another senior player,strengthening another rival’ and I understand why.

Over the last few years, we have strengthened our rivals, or lost our captain, via:

By all means, it has been a torrid time. Stadium restriction’s meant that we could not compete when it came to wage bill. The likes of Adebayor & Nasri more than doubled their wages. The fact that Adebayor is still being paid 100k a week by Manchester City shows what we were up against.

But this summer, things were supposed to have changed. We were supposed to have become more competitive. And yet we sit here, and its ‘same again Jack.’

We have already lost Bacary Sagna to Manchester City. Whilst I would not want Arsenal to have tied up £25m over 3 years in a 31 year old on the wain, it is a repeat of previous years. And now we come to Thomas Vermaelen.

Talk of him joining Manchester United is very real:

  • He shares an agent (SEG) with Robin Van Persie
  • He has a year left on his contract at Arsenal
  • He is currently Arsenal’s third choice centre back
  • Manchester United have lost Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic
  • He would be 1st choice for Manchester United

So Manchester United need a centre back, and Arsenal need to either secure Vermaelen to a new deal, or sell this summer. It all points to a move to Manchester United.

Whilst he is experienced, and, at times, has performed admirably for Arsenal, I would not be sad to see him go. Recently he has become a liability and he does not have the best fitness record.

So if we are set on selling him, we must get the best deal for him, enabling us to replace him without too much extra cost.

The obvious preferred destination is abroad, with Napoli potentially interested, however, with a British girlfriend who has just given birth to his son within the last year, it is unlikely he will be keen on a move abroad, so once more it all points to Manchester United.

Now the deal that we can potentially get. A pure cash deal would be in the region of £10m. For that, our options are limited on who we can get in. Unless Arsene Wenger can pull off another masterstroke, unearthing a talent like Koscielny or Mertesacker, £10m does not go far in this market, and there is always the risk of another Squillaci.

The option the press seem to be speculating is a cash + player deal. They have already linked us to Tom Cleverley (turn down Cesc, buy Cleverley…), Nani (Just a shit Michael Jackson) and Chris Smalling (English Senderos).

The first two are a non starter, but, after thinking about it for most of the morning, would a deal of a little bit of cash + Chris Smalling (or even a straight swap?) be so bad?

We lose an unhappy, out of form player in the last year of his contract and we gain a 24 year old centre back who, whilst having gone through a sticky time recently, has all the attributes to be a very good centre back.

Between Alex Ferguson and David Moyes, the careers of both Smalling and Phil Jones have nearly been ruined. Played mainly at right back and defensive midfield, neither has been given a run at centre back. Smalling is a big (6 4), strong, quick centre back. He would provide brilliant cover for Koscielny and Mertesacker and, at just 24, he could still develop into a top first choice centre back.

Whilst at the moment it is all press speculation, and we know how unreliable that is, I would not be too upset to see Vermaelen go to Manchester United, with Smalling coming the other way.

Tottenham Hotspur, We are laughing at you

So yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur announced their 3rd manager in under a year. And how they celebrated. It was as if they had won the Champions League (you have not, Gareth Bale plays for Real Madrid now, he does not care about you). Mauricio Pochettino will be the 11th different permanent Spurs manager that Arsene Wenger has faced. And I see no reason why he will not see his latest challenger off, despite the reported 5 year contract.

You see, Mauricio Pochettino is not a great manager, despite the hype. You only have to look at his history, firstly at Espanyol, then at Southampton.

Firstly at Espanyol, he did not exactly work miracles. With a win percentage of just 32.92%, he left them bottom of Li Liga with 9 points from 13 games. At Southampton, whilst an 8th place finish does look miraculous, a win percentage of 38.33% is not so. It perhaps indicates how poor the lower half of the Premier League was last season.

Add in the fact that he came into Southampton with a very good set up, and a lot of very good players in place, mid table was their par finish. With 2 mid table finishes at both Espanyol and Southampton, it is clear he is a mid table manager. Looks like Spurs are finally realising their level – although the fans need to catch up, they are claiming they will launch a title challenge next season.

Of course, with a new manager comes the theory that he will bring across a whole host of players who performed well at his previous club. This is rarely true. And anyway, whilst Southampton have some good players, they were only players good enough to get them to 8th. There main talent, Luke Shaw, will surely aim higher than Spurs. Adam Lallana is overpriced at £25m. Jay Rodriguez is out until Christmas. Rickie Lambert is 32. I would be very surprised Spurs can attract any of these.

Remember, Tottenham need to sell to buy. They are currently hamstrung financially by the planning of their new stadium. You only have to look at the last 5 years to see the precarious situation they are in financially:

2009/10 – £1,000,000 profit
20010/11 – £17,500,000 loss
2011/12 – £27,000,000 profit
2012/13 – £1,300,000 profit
2013/14 – £9,800,000 profit

So the deluded Spurs fans, who are sitting their expecting Pochettino to come waltzing in and have £50m to spend on new talent are misguided. He will have to sell before he can buy. And Spurs do not really have much in the cupboard to sell. Last year was the big roll of the dice, bringing in £113,500,000 in sales, it allowed them to spend over £100,000,000, but they bought duffs. They would recoup less than half of that if they were to sell all the players they bought last year.

So Spurs, you are behaving like the court jester once more. Talk of a title challenge, talk of new players, next season, you will be where you always are, mid table.
