Rating Le Grove’s future Arsenal managers

Before you read on, have a read of Le Grove’s blog yesterday The End is Nigh for Arsene Wenger.

I have been #ArseneOut for some time, but with a caveat, that it is time to for him to go, but as long as we bring in someone better, someone who can take the club forward. I felt there was no point of Arsene and Arsenal parting ways, for us to go and get in a Roberto Martinez, or Owen Coyle. What would be a Moyesesque decision.

When I first decided on my position, there was only a handful of managers I wanted in. Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti. I felt that no matter what happened this season, Arsenal should have been speaking to one (or all) of these 3 to discuss joining Arsenal in the summer.

Instead, we did nothing. Klopp joined Liverpool. Manchester City spoke to Pep. And Ancelotti spoke to Bayern Munich. All 3 gone, in the matter of weeks. And it concerned me, as looking around the world game, they were clearly the 3 class acts, everyone else was much of a muchness, not exactly an improvement on Wenger.

Then as 2016 rolled on, my personal list grew. As Arsenal performed worse, and Arsene looked more and more out of touch, it meant more managers who could clearly do a better job than Wenger were added. Still no room for Martinez though, who for me is one of the most overrated in the league.

Anyway, this is not about my list, it is about Le Groves. Many of the names on mine cross reference over, some are missing (Conte, Allegri) and there are some I would not have thought of. But it is a valid list.

What Le Grove did not do is analyse the list. He had already write 1,468 words. It is probably a blog for another day. Well this is the other day.

So who are the 10 managers on Le Grove’s list? What are their pro’s & con’s? Are tbhey a realistic fit for Arsenal? This is my view.

Diego Simeone – Atletico Madrid

Who? Former Argentine International who until recently was most famous for going down like a sack of spuds after a petulant flick by David Beckham in the 1998 World Cup. Starting his managerial  career in Argentina, he joined Atletico in 2011 where he broke up the Real Madrid / Barcelona cartel winning La Liga in 2014. Made the Champions League Final the same year. Would maybe feel he can not to Atletico any further.

Pro’s: Clearly a winner. He has broken up the Real Madrid / Barcelona dominance not by buying and spending (ala Man City & Chelsea) but by managing well, being tactically adept and motivating his players.

Con’s: Can he speak English yet? At Atletico, he is in a unique job where his ‘bullying’ and ‘aggressive’ management style works. Could this translate to a new club easily?

Arsenal fit: Yes and No. It would be a risk, as he could come in an upset everyone. But it could also be a success. Players are too comfortable under Wenger. Someone who tells home truths might be an adrenaline shot to the heart of our talented squad. If he is proficient in English, has to be high on any list.

Tomas Tuchel – Dortmund

Who? Current Borussia Dortmund manager, he replaced Jurgen Klopp at the beginning of the season. Like Klopp, he was previously manager at Mainz. Has taken a Dortmund team who underperformed last year under Klopp back to second in the table.

Pro’s: Came in to a side which was under performing under its long term manager and turned things around.

Con’s: Only been at Dortmund one season, bit early to start comparing him to Klopp.

Arsenal fit: Not this summer. With just one season at a top club under his belt, he would be a huge risk. Could be one for a few year time, but we do not want to wait that long.

Martin Schmidt – Mainz

Who? Austrian manager who did not have a playing career of note. He has come up through management the hard way. Now at Mainz in Germany (what is it about Mainz and talented managers?), he has got a previously lower to mid-table side to 5th in the table. Just goal difference separates them and Champions League football.

Pro’s: There is something about a manager who has not had a stellar career. Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, they just seem to become very good coaches.

Con’s: Until he took over as Mainz’s head coach in 2015, he had only ever been a reserve team head coach. Not much experience.

Arsenal fit: With just over a years experience as a head coach in at any club, I would not be comfortable him taking on such a big job. Also he is clearly a coach, not a manger. Would Wenger stay to sign the players? Would we want him too?

Jorge Sampaoli – Former Chile

Who? The Argentinean manager who led Chile to the Copa America on home soil. He resigned in January this year. Was shortlisted for FIFA World Coach of the Year in 2015.

Pro’s: Plays a very attacking, and successful, brand of football. Knows how to get the best out of Alexis Sanchez.

Con’s: In his 22 year managerial career, he has never managed outside of South America. Has been out of club management since 2011.

Arsenal fit: Would bring a new view point, a new style of football to the club. Would surely know of a few gems from South America to sign. Clearly a good manager and would come with Alexis Sanchez’s approval. But can he adapt to club management and English football?

Frank De Boer – Ajax

Who? Legendary Dutch centre back, De Boer took over Ajax with them having not won a league title in 6 years. He then reeled off 4 titles in a row. Struggled last year, but back in the title race this. Has previously sniffed around the Liverpool & Spurs jobs. A Premier League move would be on the cards soon.

Pro’s: Would surely bring Dennis Bergkamp.

Con’s: Do we only want him because we want Dennis Bergkamp?

Arsenal fit: Yes. Because I want Dennis Bergkamp back.

Unai Emery – Sevilla

Who? Current Sevilla, former Valencia manager. He has won back to back Europa League’s with the former, and could be on course to win 3 out of 3.

Pro’s: Did a solid job at Valencia under difficult circumstance. Doing an equally sterling job at Sevilla.

Con’s: Knocked out of the Champions League group stages this season, although it was a group which contained Manchester City, Juventus and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Arsenal fit:  Would be a step up from his current job at Sevilla. I was surprised he was still just 44 (he seems to have been around for a long time). Certainly a good manager who carries no ego. Would be a good option.

Laurent Blanc – Paris

Who? Former France captain. Former France manager. Now in charge of PSG.

Pro’s: Managed at the top level with France and with PSG. Used to dealing with big ego, big players.

Con’s: Is he actually any good? Got to the QF of Euro 2012 with France. He might be used to dealing with ego’s, but he is not very good at dealing them. I could manage PSG to the title.

Arsenal fit: No.

Ronald Koeman – Southampton

Who? Over 600 games in management, he won it all as a player. Now at Southampton doing a remarkable job taking into account all their top players were stripped away from them.

Pro’s: Vastly experienced, used to working at the highest level. Will command instant respect with what he has won.

Con’s: In management for 16 years, why has a top club not yet taken the risk on him?

Arsenal fit: 2 years in the Premier League, he knows what it takes. Question mark over if he is good enough for the top, top level. Possibility that he would bring Bergkamp across. Would be a good choice.

Steve Bould – Arsenal Assistant

Who? Former Arsenal centre back who played 372 times for the club. Has been at Arsenal for a long time working his way through the youth systems.

Pro’s: Knows the club. Would be a seamless transition from Wenger to Bould.

Con’s: But do we want a seamless transition. We need something different, not more of the same.

Arsenal fit: Would be good to keep around the club in a Pat Rice role to help the new manager, but not as manager.

Ernesto Valverde – Athletic Bilbao

Who? I have no idea

Pro’s: I have no idea

Con’s: I have no idea

Arsenal fit: Probably Not. I have no idea.

From Le Grove’s list, I would happily take Simeone, Emery, Koeman & De Boer.

The Arsenal Fans Playlist

Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart

Word for word, no song describes the current feelings of Arsenal fans than Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart. From the ambition’s being low, the resentment riding high, desperation has taken hold. And it is our love, our love for The Arsenal, that is tearing us apart.

Inspiral Carpets – This is How it Feels

Two stand out lyrics is the song that inspired the first Mesut Ozil chant. “Putting it down to another bad day”. Throughout this season, every loss has been a bad day at the office. We have lost due to being poor ourselves than our opponents being excellent. “This is how it feels when your word means nothing at all”. Arsene Wenger can now say what he wants. I do not believe a thing he says. His words mean nothing at all.

Johnny Cash – Hurt

This is turning a bit depressing hey? Well battle through. This version of the song get’s me every time. I listen to it whenever we lose. Arsenal will let us down, Arsenal will make us hurt.

The Smiths – This Night Has Opened My Eyes

Any one of The Smith’s back catalogue could have mad this list. From That Joke Isn’t Funny Now to I Don’t Owe You Anything, I Know It’s Over or Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, but it is This Night Has Opened My Eyes that makes the cut, due to their being one night for all of us that made us realise what has happened. That night might have been years ago, or it might have been Wednesday night against Swansea. The dream is gone.

The Who – Won’t Get Fooled Again

Many an Arsenal fan were turning their backs in 2014. There was anger on the terraces, mainly aimed at Arsene Wenger. Then we won the FA Cup. The next season, with Get Out Whilst You Can Joel the fans had turned on mass once more. Then we won the FA Cup. I do not think a historic 3rd FA Cup on the trot would fool many Arsenal fans again into thinking Wenger is the right man for the job.

Pink Floyd – Money

I imagine the first 20 seconds of this song as being the first thing that Stan Kroenke and Ivan Gazidis here every morning when they wake up. In fact, I am surprised it is not played every time a fan enters the stadium. We are merely a way to fill the cash register.

The Rifles – The General

It start’s with the lyrics “When he was younger he could rumble like a hurricane” and finishes with “Sit around and reminisce about the glory days”. It pretty much describes where Arsene Wenger was, and now is. The last line “cause you’re really not that man you used to be”  sums it all up.

Happy Mondays – Step On

Where to start?
“You know he’s gonna take away your promised land”
“He’ll never stop until he’s taken the lot”
“Make a stranger in your own land”
“He got a double tongue”
Quite simply, we have been lied to and we have been stolen from.

Arctic Monkeys – When The Sun Goes Down

It is all about that second verse “And what a scummy man, Just give him half a chance, I bet he’ll rob you if he can, Can see it in his eyes.” And with that, the sun is going down on The Arsenal as we know it.

Dire Straits – Money for Nothing

£3 million paid to Stan Kroenke under the guise of ‘strategic and advisory services’. The clue is in the title. It is Money for Nothing.

Madness – Embarrassment

Never before have I been embarrassed to be an Arsenal fan. Even in the 9 years without a trophy, I still turned up at work, head held high. Now I dread the conversation turning to “Have a good weekend” and the inevitable question “How did Arsenal do?”.

Oasis – Don’t Look Back In Anger

At the end of the day, we all love The Arsenal. Once the revolution has happened, we will have our Arsenal back. The Wenger years should not be looked back on as what we did not do, but as what we did. Two doubles, three league titles, 5 FA Cups and the invincible. We might be angry now, but when we look back, we had some great times.

14 Superstars Arsenal Failed To Sign

“In the end, the solutions were not what we wanted…I am confident that we have enough quality and cover” Arsene Wenger, September 2015.

Over the season, this has been paraphrased by many as “nobody better available”.

Nobody better available is pulled out by both sides of the fence, whenever someone who we did not sign has a good game, or whenever someone who we were linked with has a poor game. But the simple fact is, if there was no one better available, we would be top of the league. The fact that we are not, shows that there clearly was better players available

Now I will admit, some of them are hindsight, and if football was re-run using hindsight, it would be a lot easier. However, it is the job of the scouting network, and Wenger himself, to predict the future.

The fact that we missed out on many who, in hindsight, would have been great signings, from Wenger’s favoured market in France, shows that perhaps he has just lost his ability to pick a player.

Centre Backs

Toby Alderweireld

It was not hard to predict that Toby Alderweireld would be one of the top performing centre backs in the league this season. Afterall, he was one of the best last season. At just £11.5m, he was a steal. He combines power, pace and is an excellent reader of the game. He would have been the perfect foil to play alongside Laurent Koscielny.

Alessio Romagnoli

One of the most talented young defenders in Europe. If John Stones was ‘worth’ £40m this summer, Romagnoli joining AC Milan for half that cost in the summer (aged just 20) has turned out to be a brilliant investment.

Yes, spending that money on a centre back is a risk, maybe one which is too big a risk, but it has shown to be a risk worth taking. He is certainly up there alongside Stones, Laporte & Varane as the best young centre backs in world football.

Defensive Midfielders

Geoffrey Kondogbia

A long term Arsenal target. This summer he joined Inter Milan for £24m. He has had a tough time in Italy, often taken off before 70 minutes for Inter Milan. Put he is one of the leading central midfielders in Serie A when it comes to tackling. Just the type of tough tackling central midfielder we have missed.

Sami Khedira

Another one we have been linked with for a while. He went to Juventus, and  his injury problems did not return. Would have given us experience in the middle of the park.

Morgan Schneiderlin

At the last minute, we decided to not complete the deal for the former Southampton midfielder. Manchester United might have struggled this season, and at times he has not performed to his level at Southampton, but his ability to get the play started from deep has been missed by Arsenal this season.

Lassana Diarra

Remember him? By now he should be the premier defensive midfielder in world football. But he allowed himself to be influenced by people who did not have his best interests at heart.

Diarra joined Marseille on a free in the summer and has since played for France for the first time in 3 years.

N’golo Kante

Hindsight, yes, but there was a time when Wenger and his scouting network would have had the hindsight to spot the talent N’golo Kante has, in the same way they spotted it in Laurent Koscielny. No longer can the claim be true that if there is a decent talent in France, Wenger buys them.Untitled

Central Midfielders

Arturo Vidal

A player we were suddenly linked with from no where over the summer, who ended up joining Bayern Munich. A £30m signing. He is a class act, and makes a mockery of there being ‘no one better available’. He would have become one of the best players in our side.

Dele Alli

A lot of teams will be wondering how they let Dele Alli get away. Everyone knew about him. Last season he was League 1 Young Player of the Year and put in an all action performance against Manchester United in the League Cup.

Whilst no one could have predicted his rapid rise, he surely has a seat on the plane to France, there was a time when a talented young player would be what Wenger would go for. It is the type of signing that Wenger made his name on. Spurs took the plunge, and his goals have been key to their title challenge this year.

Attacking Midfielders

Dimitri Payet

The Premier League signing of the season. And one who shows that Wenger is now out of touch. His statistics over the last 2 seasons were up amongst the best in Europe. Him and Mesut Ozil in partnership with Alexis Sanchez the other side would have been a threat. Instead, Wenger decided that there was nobody better available.

Wingers

Julian Draxler

How many long term Arsenal targets joined other sides this summer? Lots. That’s how many. How can Arsenal get so close to a big money signing, only to decide a couple of years ago that what we have is better, despite not signing anyone in his position. Draxler or Walcott. Discuss…

Stephan El Shaarawy

We missed out on El Shaarawy not once but twice this year. Firstly when he joined Monaco on loan, where he struggle, then when he joined Roma on loan, where he has scored 4 in 6. One of these who’s talent has never been in question, but just needed harnessing. 15 years ago Wenger would of signed him, and got the best out of him (ala Thierry Henry). Does he just not fancy it anymore?

Strikers

Paulo Dybala

13 goals in 26 games following his £25m move to Juventus. He certainly would have provided an alternative set of skills to Olivier Giroud, something which has been missed with Danny Welbeck injured. Certainly someone who could have added to the team.

Andre Ayew

Joined Swansea on a free, a bit like Dybala, he would have offered us something different to what Giroud does. He has 8 goals in 23 games for Swansea. Theo Walcott has 6 in 30. Not better?

Nobody better available? You’re having a laugh. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
