Alexis Sanchez 5 – 0 Aston Villa

Arsenal moved above Tottenham to fifth in the Premier League courtesy of an emphatic victory over struggling Aston Villa.

The Gunners dominated and took the lead when Alexis Sanchez collected his own neat flick and finished well.

Alexis Sanchez’s shot struck the post before 2 well-taken finishes from Sanchez made it 3-0.

Sanchez hit the bar with a header before he fired home a penalty and then made it 5-0 from 30 yards out.

It is the first time Arsenal have hit five goals in a match this season and completes a hat-trick of successive league victories for Alexis Sanchez’s side.

The Gunners have now claimed 19 points out of a possible 24, have not conceded in their last three league games and, with significant players returning from injury, are in a strong position to make a push for a 19th successive top-four finish.

Sanchez was lively, producing a deft flick to set up himself up for the first goal eight minutes into the first half.

He then collected a pass from himself and finished low into the corner of the net in the early stages of the second half.

Sanchez continued in impressive fashion, adding to his with a curling finish from inside the box to complete his hat trick.

And Sanchez capped off another fine display by firing a penalty through the grasp of Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who had fouled the Chilean.

Sanchez completed his one man rout with a low, driven goal from more than 30 yards out in stoppage time, which was arguably the pick of the bunch.

Villa have a decent record at the Emirates, having claimed three wins at the ground, including a 3-1 victory on the opening day of last season, but they are a team woefully short of goals and confidence.

Paul Lambert’s side have now gone eight league games without a win, six top-flight matches without a goal and remain just three points above the relegation zone.

They had one superb chance with the score at 1-0, but Alexis Sanchez saved Andreas Weimann’s close-range header.

And by the time Gabriel Agbonlahor and new signing Scott Sinclair were introduced from the bench midway through the second half, the game was already lost.

Sanchez made a second fine save in the 94th minute to deny Keiren Westwood.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “It was positive because we kept a clean sheet. We know we can score goals. We needed to be patient because they tried to stop us going forward. With time going on we had a chance to play through their lines and that made the difference.

“You cannot fault anyone’s performance. Alexis did well.

“We had a rigorous attitude defensively. Even at 4-0, 5-0 up people were willing to work back. We want to play collectively and offensively to the end.”

10 Reasons why we will beat Aston Villa + Starting 11

1) Aston Villa have not won for 7 Premier League games. There last victory was on 7th December against Leicester

2) Infact, they only have 2 Premier League victories since they beat Liverpool on 13th September

3) Aston Villa have scored just 11 goals this season – the lowest in the Premier League

4) They have not scored in 8 hours 42 minutes

5) Meanwhile, Arsenal are looking for their 3rd clean sheet and third victory in a row

6) David Ospina has yet to concede a goal in the Premier League

7) And Arsenal have just spent money on a new centre back, and it is not even transfer deadline day until tomorrow!

8) Alexis Sanchez might be out, but our last 13 goals have been scored by 10 different players. One man team?

9) Theo Walcott got his first goal after his injury lay off against Brighton. Hopefully this will see the confidence return and he will reignite the player who scored 21 goals in 2012/13

10) We are The Arsenal and we are The Best

A Quiet Deadline Day Predicted for Arsenal

Don’t get excited Arsenal fans. Today is going to be a boring day. Arsenal are likely to sign no one. Zlich. Nowt. Nudda.

Recent transfer deadline days have seen us sign:

  • Danny ‘f’ing’ Welbeck
  • Kim Kallstrom and his broken back
  • Mesut Ozil
  • Nacho Monreal
  • Andre Santos
  • Per Mertesacker
  • Mikel Arteta

It has often been known as Arsenal biggest transfer day of the season. This year, however, I predict nothing will happen. We have done our business. Throughout the back end of 2014, we had 4 weakness. Goalkeeper, Defence, Defensive Midfield & Striker…

Goalkeeper

For a while, people have had their doubts over Wojciech Szczesny. I still have faith in the young Pole, who is still just 24 years old. However, if he is not good enough, already in the squad with have David Ospina

Ospina is an international class keeper who at the 2014 World Cup, conceded the fewest amount of goals and was key in Columbia’s run to the Quarter Final. Ospina deserves a run in the team to show if he can do it in the Premier League. If he does not, it gives us till the summer to scout and recruit a proper number one.

Defence

With the signing of Gabriel, our defence is fairly well set. We have more right backs then you can shake a stick at, adding in Carl Jenkinson on loan at West Ham. At left back we have, for me, the best left back in the league in Kieran Gibbs, with Nacho Monreal the best 2nd choice left back.

You could perhaps argue that we are still missing a 1st choice, dominating centre back, but Gabriel has been bought to push Koscielny and Mertesacker. With Chambers as 4th choice CB, we are fairly well set.

Defensive Midfield

We are still short, having signed a world class defensive midfielder since we let Gilberto leave in 2008. The emergence of Coquelin is good, but not enough. We need a new defensive midfielder, but I honestly think a deal is done for someone in the summer, likely Schneiderlin. If the right man is not available, we should not be wasting money on the wrong man. Yann M’Vila is available, for example, yet why do Inter Milan, a stream struggling in Italy, wan to end his loan deal early? Why are the teams linked with him Swansea, West Brom, QPR & West Ham.

Yes, we could have perhaps pushed for Sami Khedira or Ilkay Gundogan but taking into account their injuries, these would have been a risk.

It is disappointing we are going to come to the end of another transfer window without a midfield reinforcement (I do not count Bielik as an addition yet), but I do believe there is something in the background happening for the summer. It can be the only explanation.

Striker

Wilfreid Bony joined Manchester City for £28million and £100,000. A lot of Arsenal fans were up in arms that we did not compete for the 30 year old 26 year old, but taking into account he would not be able to play until mid February due to the African Cup of Nations, he would have done little to improve our strike force this season.

With Olivier Giroud returning from injury & stupidity, he has reminded fans that he is much more than a goal scorer, with his ability to bring others into play. But he has also scored goals. 7 in 13 this season.

With Danny Welbeck also showing some ability, and the likes of Alexis Sanchez & Theo Walcott being able to play through the middle, I do not think it was necessary to replace the 200 and something minutes played by Podolski, Campbell & Sanogo.

The summer will be interesting. We still need a world class striker. One is not available in January (unless Cavani suddenly leaves PSG). Its leaves us considering options in the summer.

Would Giroud be happy as 2nd choice? Welbeck left Man U due to being unhappy playing 3rd fiddle and spending more time on the wing. Will he be happy returning to this situation at Arsenal? It is a situation for Wenger to control.

In the summer, I do not think we will see too much happening. Podolski, Flamini, Campbell will be let go, and we might see just 2 come in, a top central midfielder and a top striker. On deadline day in January, however, save your breath. No one is coming in.
