Arsenal intensify chase for Petr Cech replacement

Already identified as Arsenal’s number one goal keeping target, the club need to move quickly to secure Petr Cech’s long term replacement.

Reports emanating from Spain indicate that Arsenal are lining up a deal to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the summer.

Atletico number one Oblak is rated as one of the best in the world and has been linked with a move away from the Spanish capital some time.

With Real Madrid set to target either Thibaut Courtois or David de Gea this summer, Arsenal need to move quickly to complete a deal.

Competition for Oblak will only increase once Real Madrid have secured their number 1. The Slovenian will be high on both Manchester United and Chelsea’s wish list as a replacement.

With a history or dilly-dallying over transfers, Arsenal, new director of football Raul Sanllehi could be key to any deal to bring the ‘keeper to the Premier League.

Former Barcelona director Sanllehi was officially appointed to help Arsene Wenger restructure the scouting and recruiting system at the Emirates Stadium. He officially assumed the role at the start of February.

Sanllehi was revered in Catalonia for his work with transfers during his time at the Camp Nou.

He helped bring Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic to the club in 2014, and was instrumental in ensuring Neymar chose Barca over Real Madrid when he arrived from Santos in 2013.

At just 25, Oblak has arguably a good decade of his best years ahead of him, and he must be considered as one of the best five goalkeepers in the world, alongside the likes of de Gea, Manuel Neuer and Courtois.

Oblak has a reported £88.7 million release clause, and it’s thought that Diego Simeone’s side would fight tooth and nail to keep the player in the Spanish capital in spite of his contract situation.

With Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having joined the club in January, signing Oblak would be a huge step in the right direction for Arsenal.

Any move for Oblak needs to be completed quickly, before other clubs identify him as a transfer target.
