On the eve of the Premier League, Arsenal are undercooked again

So it is the eve of the start of the Premier League. Tomorrow will be Arsenal’s first game of the 2017/18 season, having been delightfully picked by whichever TV company to play on the Friday night, despite Arsenal being involved in semi-competitive action against Chelsea on Sunday. More of that later.

For the umpteenth year in a row, Arsenal begin the league campaign undercooked in terms of squad additions. At the time of writing, it is still just Alexandre Lacazette and Saed Kolasinac. No sign of Thomas Lemar, Jean-Michael Seri or Batman.

What started off as a terrific start to the window with two top signings is currently petering out to same old Arsenal, taking the piss (out of the fans).

Lacazette and Kolasinac are top signings. Ignore the idiots who say Lacazette only scored against French farmers, the same people demand to know why Arsenal are not signing Mbappe or Lemar, or missed out on Mahrez or Kante.

As for Kolasinac, he was named the best Bundesliga player of the year. And just because weirdo Paul who sits behind his laptop all day masturbating to One Direction doesn’t know who he is, does not mean he is not a top player.

But it still feels short. We do are still lacking a creative option up top, and another central midfielder is still desirable. The squad still has plenty of deficiencies.

I am also concerned by the lack of players leaving.

Of the 12 that I expected to leave this summer, only 3 have gone thus far. We still have plenty to ship out.

It is same old story for Arsenal on the eve of the Premier League, it will be the same old excuses coming from Arsene Wenger’s mouth if we fail to win once more, and it will be the same old silence from the board.

Whilst I think the TV companies could have been a little bit fairer to Arsenal with the Friday night slot, I do not actually mind it.

Last season, Arsenal got away with playing a game on a Friday night, despite almost every other side having a fixture. Every club will play, on average, one game on Friday, so at least we have got ours out the way early, and we are at home.

What it means is a trip to Islington straight from work, few beers before the game, watch us win, then stay in Islington till the last train home. Which means never going home since TFL introduced 24 hour weekend trains on the Victoria Line.

It also means still having the whole weekend. A bit of golf. Some gardening. Watch the athletics. Have a tug. It is not the worst scenario to be in.

A Friday night game is a lot better than a Monday night game – where you potentially have to take the whole of Monday off, before appearing at work on Tuesday hungover, having had 4 hours sleep.

Get a bad away draw on a Friday night and worst case scenario is a day off work, and a Friday night in a northern slum or Swansea. Not the worst way to spend a weekend.

So up The Arsenal. Come on your Reds. Support the team, not the regime.

Community Shield win highlights squad deficiencies

Sundays victory over Chelsea, whilst excellent, did highlight the current deficiencies in the squad.

The XI that played was the strongest we could put out. Bar perhaps new boy Saed Kolasinac playing at left wing back and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain moving across to right.

The victory on penalties has papered over some cracks. Cracks in the squad where we are weak.

With Aaron Ramsey out, it left us with Mohamed Elneny starting and, with Francis Coquelin also out, not a single central midfielder on the bench.

If Arsenal are to compete this season, we need 5 central midfielders. In the “squad” we currently have 6:

Xhaka
Ramsey
Elneny
Coquelin
Cazorla
Wilshere

You can pretty much exclude the bottom two. Santi Cazorla is out till 2018 and Jack Wilshere is unreliable and on his way out. That leaves us with 4. One short.

What we need to buy in the middle of the park is not a player who can be back up – we have that in Elneny and Coquelin – but a player who can compete for a first team place alongside Ramsey or Xhaka.

The name on everyone’s lips at the moment is Jean-Michael Seri.

Another option Arsenal should seriously consider is Bayern Munich’s Renato Sanches. Even if it is a loan deal.

With Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil out due to lack of fitness, creativity was also a massive concern.

Playing Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck behind a striker will not drive fear into opponents this season.

Iwobi is a talent, but he should never be Arsenal’s main creative force on the pitch. He is too inconsistent and go’s missing a lot. However he is a good understudy for Mesut Ozil.

Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck is simply not a creative force he is a willing runner and will work hard, but he does not possess the creativity of Alexis Sanchez.

It is not news to anyone that Arsenal need to sign Thomas Lemar. Some might question how we can keep Lemar, Sanchez and Ozil happy, but with Arsenal set to play up to 60 games this season, there is enough to go around.

If Arsenal do get Lemar, and I am still sure they will, it will give them the option of resting players, especially after long trips on international duty, and give us real quality on the bench to change the game.

On a more positive note, we were able to compete with Chelsea’s strongest XI (bar Hazard) without Sanchez, Ozil, Ramsey, Koscielny and Mustafi.

Sunday was a good victory, but it just further highlighted that we are 2 players short of a real title challenge.

Thomas Lemar to Arsenal lies exposed

No one outside of Arsene Wenger’s inner circle really know what is happening at Arsenal when it comes to transfers. Anyone that pretends to know what is happening; whether you’re an account, a mole, or a bean head who wears baseball caps, is simply a liar. A fraud. An attention seeker.

And we now see the excuses coming out of these ITKs over the deal with Lemar.

A month ago, they were all claiming “Lemar is done. Announced soon.”

2 weeks after their announcement it was “Arsenal are giving Monaco the chance to sign a replacement”.

Now Monaco seemingly have replacements in, having signed 2 attacking options, the narrative has changed once more.

It is now “Arsenal need to sell to make space for Lemar”.

So what has changed in the month? Surely a 4 weeks ago Arsenal were letting Monaco sign replacements, and knew they had to shift on players? Why are they only “breaking” this news in drips. It is almost as if they are making it up as they go along.

Obviously it is because they do not know what is happening. They called a deal done. It was not done. And now they are trying to explain why it is not yet done.

If the deal doesn’t happen, they will find the ultimate excuse “the deal was agreed but Arsenal stalled on it. My information was not wrong.”

But you said the deal was done? Do you know what done means? Or were you making it all up?

If Lemar does sign for Arsenal, it does not mean that these accounts had inside information. It just means they guessed right. These sort of accounts make a dozen or so wishey washy predictions over a summer, they are bound to get one right.

Don’t give them the oxygen. Don’t fall for their lies. And don’t believe their excuses.

Remember, no one knows what is happening at Arsenal. Why would a recruitment consultant, a bloke pretending to be a horse, a furniture maker, or a student bored on his summer break know what is going on within the corridors of the club?

Hell, they have even started to pretend to “know” the starting XI.

Don’t believe the lies.

Ps: Knowing my luck Lemar will be announced today and all the drippy ITKs will mock this post. Well done, it does not defeat the fact that you lie about knowing stuff about Arsenal n the internet to impress people you have never met.
