Sack Wenger…TODAY

I was there with 40,000 odd Arsenal fans there yesterday. I’m always there.

When the fixtures come out I don’t pick and choose.  What I do, like many others is plan my whole life around following us around the country.

But, this week, for the first time ever I’m choosing not to go on Thursday. Not because I expect us to lose, but because you no longer deserve my support.

Did you see 20,000 fans leave with 20 minutes to go? Up until a few weeks ago I would have been very critical of that. Now, I completely understand it. That’s the apathy I keep talking about. That’s your bread and butter making a stand and protesting. They may not all march, they may not all sing Wenger or board out or hold banners,  but even worse, they don’t give a shit anymore.

I didn’t expect a win. We are very average at best and city and very good. What I did expect was to see 11 men wearing our shirt with pride. Sticking their foot in, winning the ball back, defending like trojans because it mattered. But actually I don’t see a winning mentality from anyone on the pay roll in the club. I see a manager who sits down and watches the horror unfolding in silence.  I see professional footballers earning a lot of money and who have had the best training since the age of 10 making school boy errors. I see an assistant manager chewing gum and clock watching because he wants to get home.

In football you win some and lose some. Cup finals there are no favourites, there are those who want it enough to fight for it. Battlers win cup finals, bottlers win nothing.

I’ve seen us lose finals before, but I’ve never seen us lose one in that manner. We will be fed with the  ‘played with the handbrake on’ ‘we were a little slow off the blocks’ crap. Do any of you ask Wenger when the handbrake is going to be turned off once and for all? Do you ever question him or hold him to account.

Gazidis told us he expected a ‘sustained title challenge this year’. That was the brief given to the manager at the beginning of the season. The challenge never started. Maybe someone forgot to take the handbrake off.

You and your manager will gloss over the result, like you always do. But you cannot gloss over the fact that many of us no longer care.

I stayed until the final whistle because I wanted to be there to sing Wenger Out. Few of us did, most didn’t.  Most won’t turn up to protest about him, but that’s the least of your worries now, as the big travesty in all of this is your fans have stopped caring, even to protest.

You don’t have the balls to sack him because you’ve made him more important than us. You believe the hype, you are more stuck than we are looking back on the great days.

I blame Wenger 100%, but I despise your ineptness to do your job.

You are custodians of OUR club, you are failing in your duty. None of you have put a penny into the club, buying shares makes you rich later down the line and that’s it. You sacrifice nothing, you’ve probably never even paid to watch a football match.

Do your job, sack him today.

Tottenham Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary

Tomorrow Arsenal play in the League Cup Final at Wembley. The clubs 4 visit to Brent in under 5 years.

But today is also a cause of celebration in North London. Not for Arsenal fans, but for fans of Tottenham.

Today is the 10th anniversary of Tottenham winning their last trophy. The 2008 League Cup.

It is quite ironic really, that whilst Spurs fans talk of a power shift, and boast about their teams success, Arsenal are in the ones in a final.

And the trophy Arsenal are playing for is own considered as “not enough” to make it a successful season. The same trophy (Just with a different sponsor name) as Spurs fans won 10 years ago.

It perhaps shows the size of the gap between the two clubs. That it is 10 years since Tottenham last won a trophy, and Arsenal are playing for it that same trophy tomorrow. Whilst Spurs celebrate having won that trophy as their greatest success in the last 27 years, Arsenal would see winning the trophy as a failure.

So Tottenham, enjoy your 10 year anniversary. Buy your loved one a tin. And remember, it takes a lost more than one season to shift the power.

Arsenal have nothing to fear from dying giants AC Milan

That is Arsenal out then was the response when the little bit of paper was opened up shortly after 12-noon showing that Arsenal were to play AC Milan in the next round of the Europa League.

AC Milan, one of the big boys of Europe. A name up there with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester United and Juventus. 7 times Champions League winners, 18 times Serie A winners. They are one of the big boys that we were told we would be competing with when moving to the Emirates.

There is no arguing that AC Milan are one of the biggest names in world football. But a bit like Liverpool, this is based on the past. In the present, they are actually a fairly average team. One that Arsenal should not fear.

Despite having spent nearly €200m this season on new players, AC Milan sit 7th in Serie A, 25 points behind leaders Napoli.

In the league, they are in a similar position as Arsenal, although an argument could be made that the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs are strong than the likes of Sampdoria, Roma, Lazio and Napoli.

Napoli are out of the Europa League, and Juventus and Roma are both behind in their ties. The Italian league is certainly not what it used to be back when Football Italia was on Channel 4.

AC Milan do not score enough goals, and concede too many. In 25 games this season, they have scored just 35 goals, and conceded 30. Arsenal have scored 16 more goals in just 2 games more.

Under former Glasgow Rangers midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, their form has got better, unbeaten in 7 games in the league, but they are still not very good.

In the last round of the Europa League, they played Ludogorets Razgrad. Having won the first leg 3-0 away, they limped home in the second leg 1-0 (yes, we lost). This a Ludogorets team that Arsenal put 6 past in last years Champions League.

Sticking in most Arsenal fans mind is the 4-0 defeat at the San Siro in 2012. At the time, it was Arsenal’s heaviest in European competition, and the first time in 222 European games (excluding qualifiers) that Arsenal had lost by 4 or more goals. This has obviously happened a couple of times since.

The AC Milan side that day contained the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović, Thiago Silva, Robinho, Clarence Seedorf, Mark van Bommel, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Philippe Mexès,

Ibrahimovic and Robinho, then compare it to their current forward line.

Despite spending so much in the summer, their two main strikers are Liverpool flop Suso and Fabio Borini, formally of Sunderland. No wonder they have not scored many goals.

The game is an ideal match up for Arsenal.

The big name of AC Milan should be enough for Arsene Wenger to take the game seriously and put out his strongest XI. The players should also be able to get motivated without much help.

Often the dangers in the Europa League are the lesser names who are up and coming, your Sevilla’s or Atletico Madrid’s of this world. Teams who are on an upwards trajectory. The best teams to often play are the big names who’s management, players and fans think the Europa League is below them.

AC Milan certainly fall into that category.

So the draw has not been unkind to Arsenal. It is not a trip to a dangerous lesser team, or to the cold winds of Russia.

And as a final thought, I imagine there is an AC Milan blogger who has written the exact same article as this, only detailing how Arsenal were not the team that we once were. How Arsenal are a team on the slide, who think the Europa League is something to not be taken seriously.

Play the strongest XI, we win.
