Arsenal victory did more than just paper over the cracks

So that’s the cracks papered over then, some might say.

And to some extent, yes it is. Last night we faced the Borussia Dortmund who currently lie 3rd from bottom in the Bundesliga. The Borussia Dortmund who last weekend threw away a 2 goal lead to draw against SC Paderborn 07 (no, me neither). It was not the Borussia Dortmund that, before yesterday, had swept all aside in the Champions League, winning 4 from 4.

But there is no need to put a negative spin on last. It was a good, controlled performance and has ensured that, for the 15th season in a row, we qualify for the Champions League knock out stages.

Yaya Sanogo’s first goal for the club, whilst offside, could give a boost to a man who, whilst talented, has struggled since his move to England. He is still just 21, and I think we he could go from strength to strength – as long as he stays fit. Add this goal to the brace he scored for France u21s last week, his confidence should be soaring.

As for Alexis Sanchez. His finish was Pires-esque. This guy is a class above. Enough has already been written about him in other blogs. He raises the quality of our team. He is what you would expect from a big summer signing. I look forward to when Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott return, as it will only make Sanchez better. It will be scary.

Of course, there were a couple of negatives. Sanogo limped off with a tight hamstring and, more worryingly, Mikel Arteta’s injury could rule him out for 5 weeks.

And Arteta’s injury really is the story of our season. As Olivier Giroud returns, Jack Wilshere gets ruled out for up to 10 weeks. As Laurent Koscielny returns, Arteta is ruled out for 5 weeks. It really has been one step forward one step back with injuries this season.

Personally, with the lack of central midfielder’s at our disposal, I would not mind us changing formation. Go 442 with Flamini and Ramsey in the middle, Sanchez and Chamberlain out wide, and Welbeck and Giroud up top. But it wont happy, Wenger will remain stubborn to his 4141.

Qualification secured for another season. A run of 3 games without a win ended. Let’s get the positivity and momentum going.

Our next 4 games are winnable. 12 for 12 is not out of the question. It might not put us back in the title race, but would catapult us up the league.

Back the boys on the pitch. Arsenal first.

On a side night, as a massive cricket fan, and someone who was out in Melbourne and Sydney for the 2010/11 Ashes series, last nights result pales into insignificance upon hearing the news of Australian cricketer Philip Hughes’ death. Just 25 years old.

The prayers and thoughts of everyone involved in SheWore go out to Philip Hughes friends, family and Sean Abbott.

RIP Philip Hughes.

Arsenal ‘first big test’ reminiscent to 1991 Battle of Old Trafford

This morning I came across a video on my Facebook fed, it was highlights of the 1991 Manchester United v Arsenal game. The famous game which saw a 21 man bust up (David Seaman acting the pacifist), the game which led to Arsenal being deducted 2 points, the game which resulted in a 1-0 victory for The Arsenal.

The reason I mention the game, and the video, is due to the opening line by the commentator of the highlights:

“Back in the league Arsenal faced their first real heavyweight contest of the season, Manchester United away at Old Trafford.”

Fast forward 22 years, and 21 days, Arsenal are facing a similar prospect. With all pundits still claiming that Arsenal will not win the league (Manchester City – currently 6 points behind – and Chelsea – Currently losing to WBA 2-1 are favourites.) The thinking behind this, as we all know, is the feeling that Arsenal have yet to be tested.

A bit like back in 1991, commentators throughout the game will be saying tomorrows game against Manchester United will be our “first real heavyweight contest of the season’ despite us already having beaten Tottenham, Liverpool, Napoli & Borussia Dortmund. There is definitely a reluctance in the Manchester/Scouse led press to accept Arsenal as proper title challengers.

And what happens if we do beat Manchester United? Will they simply reprint the Wayne Rooney quotes:

“We’ll have to wait and see where Arsenal are in March.”

Or will they accept that we are finally title challengers? And what for Manchester United? Defeat for them will leave them 11 points behind in the title race. Surely we will see ‘Manchester United: A club in crisis’ headlines, and an official declaration by Alan Hansen et al that Manchester United are out of the title race? Or will they sweep it under the covers?

If Manchester United beat us, I can already see the headlines:

Arsenal lose first real test

Pundits will sit there telling the world that they told us so, declaring that Manchester United are in the title race, whilst Arsenal have no chance of the title. Remember, lose to United and we will still be top of the table.

All I know is that, like in 1991, the game tomorrow will be a feisty one, with Manchester United knowing it will be the end of their title defence if they lose, and Arsenal knowing that they can cement their place at the top of the league with victory.

An advantage tomorrow will be that we do not need to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. We can sit back and catch them on the counter attack, as we did with Dortmund on Wednesday night. A draw is still a good result for us, it will not be for them.

Arsenal beat Manchester United in their first big test in 1991, and went on to win the league. Deja vu anyone?

1-0 to The Arsenal – A fifth famous scalp

Tonight Arsenal became the first English side to win in Dortmund. This follows up a victory in Germany last year, when Arsenal became the first English side to win in Munich. Arsenal are also the first English side to beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, the first English side to beat AC Milan in the San Siro, and the first English side to beat Inter Milan at the San Siro. And who can forget Paul Vaessen scoring to make Arsenal the 1st English team to win at Juventus in 1980?

The victory was old school Arsenal. Defending. Riding their luck. And 1-0 to The Arsenal. Yes, we might not have had any shots in the first half, but in all honesty, we restricted Borussia Dortmund to not much more than a few pot shots from distance.

Per Mertesacker showed once more that it does not matter if you do not have pace if your brain is quicker than any other player on the pitch. If you can not get past a defender, it does not matter that you are quicker than him, and the way he marshalled and lead his men at the back was reminiscent to Tony Adams in the 90s. Is Per Mertesacker the best centre back in European football? It will be hard to argue against it. Especially when you remember a defenders job is to defend, not to pass the ball around and look pretty.

Another goal from The General that is Aaron Ramsey. Backing up my claim that Per Mertesacker is the best defender in Europe, is there a better midfielder?

Arsenal target Robert Lewandowski has joined another Arsenal target, Luis Suarez, is the pocket of the defence. A poor performance reinforcing my view that he is fairly overhyped. The Polish Andy Cole, is what I nicknamed him a couple of years ago. He needs a lot of chances for his goals.

A victory against Marseille does not guarantee Arsenal progression, as a Dortmund win at home to Napoli leaves us on 12, and both Napoli & Dortmund on 9. It would leave a 3 way shoot out for the top 2 places going into the last day.

After victories against Liverpool and Dortmund, I am finally looking forward to a real test away to Manchester United on Sunday. With 15 games unbeaten away from home, it will actually be disappointing to not win on Sunday.

Just a reminder of those records:

  • Arsenal are the 1st English team to win away to Juventus
  • Arsenal are the 1st English team to win away to Inter Milan
  • Arsenal are the 1st English team to win away to Real Madrid
  • Arsenal are the 1st English team to win away to AC Milan
  • Arsenal are the 1st English team to win away to Bayern Munich
  • Arsenal are the 1st English team to win away to Borussia Dortmund

Up The Arsenal
