How do The Invincibles and Class of 2017 compare?

Yesterday Arsene Wenger cam out and claimed his current crop of forwards was the best options he has had in his 2 decades at the club, surpassing the invicibles:

“Certainly numbers-wise and quality-wise together [they are the best],” Wenger said ahead of today’s clash with struggling Watford.

“We had never so many players who could perform and score goals – certainly never.

“Dennis and Thierry had the quality but we did not have a large number. We had Sylvain Wiltord and Robert Pires as well so it was not bad.”

Many have used this of further proof that Arsene Wenger is a deluded old man who has gone senile. It is further quotes to prove that he now looks at the current set up through rose tinted glasses.

Arsenal’s current forward options are: Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil & Lucas Perez. How can these compare to Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires, Kanu and Sylvain Wiltord. The invincibles.

Well the statistics do make for interesting reading:

Invincibles v Class of 2017

goals-in-order

So the Invincibles scored a goal every 2.96 games. Whilst the Class of 2017 are a goal every 3.01 games. Almost nothing in it. We are talking about a 5 minute difference. But of course, it disproves Arsene Wenger’s point. The Invincibles were superior goal scorers, but only just. And probably not by as much as people think.

For me there are main differences between the two groups of players is top end quality. The Invincibles had Thierry Henry.

Henry is by far and away the most clinical player out of the 12 players and the primary reason that the Invincibles scored more than the Class of 2017.

A minor reason is Dennis Bergkamp against Mesut Ozil. Bergkamp was much more of a striker than Mesut Ozil. Scored more goals.

Henry better than Giroud, Bergkamp better than Ozil. When you combine all 12 players into a single long list, it makes equally as interesting reading.

Long List

long-list

This list further proves that Henry was superior to every other player. Our greatest goal scorer of all time. But the next two on the list are interesting. Both from the Class of 2017. This shows that whilst the Invincibles were heavily reliant on goals from Henry, the Class of 2017 has two goal scoring options.

Lucas Perez has to kind of be disregarded as he has played so few games to make a true judgement.

You then have the next 5. Pires, Bergkamp, Wiltord, Welbeck & Walcott. Very similar games to goal ratio.

So the Invincibles had the best goal scorer, but the Class of 2017 had the better options.

Player v Player

side-by-sideA last comparison is just seeing players per their position.

Again, this highlights the importance of Henry and Bergkamp. Henry is vastly superior to Giroud. Bergkamp better than Ozil. This is not exactly ground breaking news.

On the left hand side, Sanchez out scores Pires, which again is not exactly surprising. Sanchez is better than Pires.

The right hand side of the midfield might surprise you. Walcott is more dangerous than Ljungberg.

Wiltord and Welbeck are both hardworking strikers who also cover the wide positions. Wiltord had played a lot more than Welbeck, but their record is identical.

Lastly we have Perez v Kanu. Not similar in style, but they are the lost ones left. Kanu on his day was a game changer, but was extremely inconsistent. A scorer of great goals, rather than a great goal scorer.

I think it is wrong to compare the Invincibles to the Class of 2017. The Invincibles won league titles, and went unbeaten. Add in a lot of FA Cups. Whilst the current crop have just those 2 FA Cups to show for their efforts. But the comparison does make interesting reading, and the difference is not as much as you would think.

The difference is Bergkamp and Henry.

Note: I know I spelt Wiltord’s name wrong in the pretty pictures

How does Theo Walcott rank amongst Arsenal GREATS?

The man of the moment. The phoenix from the flames. Lazarus himself. Theo James Walcott.

He is in a superb being of form. Much has been written about it. Many have apologised. Although Lily Allen has yet to apologise to him on behalf of the entire country. He is back to the form of 2012/13 when he scored 21 goals in 43 games. The same season Gareth Bale had his glorious season for that lot up the road, scoring 26 in 44.

Then it went down hill. 2 years of injury followed by last year where he looked done, shot. Over. RIP Theo Walcott. Sleep with the fishes.

And then we come to this season. He has already hit 7 goals in just 9 games. He has hit 5 league goals in each of the last 3 seasons. He already has 5 this season after the first 5 games. In fact, this is already his 4th highest scoring Premier League campaign. And the clocks have not even gone back yet.

Over 2 years ago, I wrote a blog about Theo Walcott. Would people love Theo Walcott if he had red hair?

Whilst the title was in jest, the comparison between Freddie Ljungberg was clear and obvious. A nice little table I did at the time highlighted how close they are in terms of out put.

untitled

Theo Walcott is just 7 goals off the century. 100 goals for Arsenal. He has currently scored 21 goals more than Freddie Ljungberg. He is just 6 short of Paul Merson (who frustratingly fell 1 short of being able to raise his bat to the pavilion).

So just how does Theo Walcott rank amongst the best and brightest of Arsenal goal scorers?

top-scorers

Walcott is currently Arsenal’s 20th highest all time top scorer. Scoring more than the likes of Alan Sunderland (92), Robert Pires (84), Charlie George (49), Ljungberg (72), George Armstrong (68), Liam Brady (59), Charlie Nicholas (54) and Kevin Campbell (59).

But he has played sooooo many games you all moan. Here’s another pretty table:

goals-to-games

Out of the 47 players who have scored over 50 goals for The Arsenal, Theo Walcott is 33rd on the list when it comes to games to goals.

The might seem lowly, but it does not take penalties, has rarely played as a striker, and his 1 goal every 3.8 games is still better than other wingers such as Merson (4.3) and Ljungberg (4.6).

So where does Theo Walcott rank?

The answer is a lot better than some would think. He is certainly not one of the worst players to have played in an Arsenal shirt that some make him out to be.

If he continues current form, there is no reason why he should not break into the Top 10 Arsenal goal scorers in the next 18 months. Could he possibly make Top 5? Potentially.

Enjoy Middlesbrough. It’s my first game in nearly a month due to circumstances within my control. Will be good to have a booze up in the usual haunts with my pals.

Have a good weekend.

Arsenal beat Swansea – But not everyone is happy

So I didn’t watch the game. I am still enjoying a bit of downtime in Suffolk with some family enjoying the fresh air, visits to garden centres, walks in the meadows, the sort of boring stuff that people who don’t live in London do. But I must say I feel refreshed.

I caught some of it on TalkSPORT and, expectedly, the commentary was biased. Will come onto this later.

Another two goals for Theo Walcott and a cracking finish for Mesut “stealing a living” Ozil are clear highlights. The change in attitude and performances by Theo this season is incredible. He is back to the free scoring winger that was was in 2012/13.

Walcott could have had a couple more (not the 6 more than TalkSPORT exegaratted too) but there is nothing to complaint about. And anyone who complains that he only scored 2 is a bit of a tosser.

Talking about tossers complaining. I see people moaning and arguing over the Granit Xhaka red card. Straight after the game. On Twitter.

https://twitter.com/highbury_74/status/787325315890745344

I completely agree with that. Arsenal won the game, went top, and yet all people can do is argue on Twitter. Go out. Have a beer. Celebrate with mates. Although I imagine those arguing are the usual drips who do not go to games, sit watching it on a dodgy laptop stream, wearing their new Arsenal shirt with Granit Xhaka on the back, screaming Wenger Out to the TV then spending all evening online. Oh, and they are #AgainstModernFootball too, despite being part of the problem.

That is probably why I have taken an enforced break from Twitter. Too many drips who think that are hard behind a screen, who cater to 14 year old Ahmed in Dubai, and get excited that a bunch of teenage boys like and RT their tweets. I am done on the platform for a bit. Agendas, keyboard warriors and liars spoiling the decent conversations.

Anyway, I have digressed. Back to the game. Back to The Arsenal.

Had you said after that Liverpool defeat, with no new CB or striker, that we would be sitting, after 8 games, level at the top of the league, I would have laughed at you.

Especially with Man City and the God-like Pep Guardiola running away with it, and Spurs being unbeaten – only they could unbeaten and be below Arsenal.

It is testament to the side, the management, and how we are moving forward.

Although the bitter British media seem to be crying into their free coffees.

After the result, Danny Gabbidon, he of WBA, Cardiff, West Ham, QPR, Crystal Palace and Pateng, gave the summary. And I will summarise to the best of my memory.

“This result shows why Arsenal are not title contenders. Any decent team would have stuck 6 or 8 past this Swansea team. They were awful defensively and lucky to win. They are not title contenders.”

This weekend, Arsenal won, the champions were spanked, the league leaders held to a draw, and the only unbeaten side in the league failed to win against WBA.

Arsenal were the only side in the top 3 to win.  Yet it is Arsenal’s result which shows why they are not champion material?

Down to 10 men and hanging on for a win. Any other side would have shown their “championship credentials”. But not Arsenal. Not with the biased British media.

So fuck you Danny Gabbidon. Fuck you British media. And fuck you moaning Arsenal fans who moan about everything. Tossers the lot of you.
