Gareth Bale – Arsenal’s Number One Summer Target

Second in La Liga, out of the Champions League at the semi final stage. Whilst the majority of teams throughout Europe would see that as a successful season, that is not the case at Real Madrid, where anything less than winning trophies is seen as failure.

Real Madrid will view this as a horrendous season. Four points behind Barcelona, knocked out of the Champions League by their own youth product and knocked out of the Copa del Rey to Atletico Madrid – who also came out on top of the Supercopa de España (Spanish Community Shield). Heads will role.

One of those will be Gareth Bale.

The Welsh star’s performances at Madrid have been seen by many in Spain as less than satisfactory, having signed for over £75million 2 years ago.

The difference between Real Madrid and Barcelona this season has been how their ‘”Majestic 3” have combined. Lionel Messi, Neymar & Luis Suarez have blended together well, whilst Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale & James have simply not. Bale will be the one to take the blunt of the blame.

With Real Madrid’s habit of making a marquee signing every season, they will look at their Majestic 3 as the reason why they have failed to win La Liga or the Champions League this season. And the blame for the failure of the Majestic 3 will be laid at Gareth Bale’s feet.

The key issue is he is not Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo scores goals. He is the Real Madrid poster boy. Tanned, smiling, eloquent, back to back Ballon d’Or winner. Bale has struggled with Spanish and not connected with the fans. He is been labelled a failure.

The reality, however, is somewhat difference. Gareth Bale has not been a failure at Real Madrid. He has actually been very good.

This season he is Real Madrid’s 3rd highest goal scorer with 17 in all competitions. He was also 3rd last season. Both years behind Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. 39 goals in 90 games since moving to Spain. Not a bad return.

When you think that last year, Bale’s first season in Spain was labelled as average, whilst Angel di Maria was being talked about as one of the best players in the world – Bale scored twice as many goals as di Maria.

The problem is, up against Cristiano Ronaldo, he looks a failure. In the last 2 years, Ronaldo has scored 101 goals. An astonishing return. And that is the criticism. He was signed for a similar amount of money as Ronaldo, so Madridistas think he should have the same return as Ronaldo. In theory, it is correct, in reality, they are different players offering differing things.

Ronaldo is a massive part of the problem for Bale at Real Madrid. Alongside the comparison of the two’s statistics, they do not seem to get on with each other on the pitch.

Yesterday against Juventus is a perfect example. Ronaldo passed to Bale just once. Now in defence of Ronaldo, it would be interesting to see the stats of a left and right winger passing to each other in other games. I imagine Pires and Ljungberg rarely passed to each other. However, just 1 pass does scream out as two players not getting on.

The other issue is the players at Real Madrid. They look to Ronaldo first. He is always the first thought of passing to when team mates get the ball. A pass to Bale is secondary, by which point, Bale has made his run and is now offside, or has lost the yard of space he created for himself. Being the second thought puts him at the disadvantage. It has also been tough on him that he receives the ball less than at the club he was previously out, so their is more pressure on him to do something special everytime he gets the ball. This leads to taking more risks, playing less relaxed, and losing the ball more – he lost possession 11 times against Juventus.

This all results in a very unhappy Gareth Bale, a very unhappy Real Madrid, with the ultimate solution being the two parting way’s in the summer.

Arsenal need to ensure they make Gareth Bale their number one target.

The weakest part of our out field players this season has been right wing. With Theo Walcott’s demise over his last 2 years due to injury, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s lack of progress, and Serge Gnabry’s year long lay off, it has left us playing Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla right wing. Not ideal.

I have long been of the belief that it would be better to buy a right winger rather than a striker, for the pure fact that there are more options out wide throughout world football (Bale, Sterling, Griezmann, Reus) than strikers (struggling to name any).

All 4 of those I mentioned above would be brilliant signings, and Bale should be at the top of the list. He is the superior player, and has previously performed in the Premier League. You would know what you are getting by signing Bale. He would take no time to settle.

This makes me also think of another comparison.

Antoine Griezmann is having an excellent season. He has scored 25 goals in 51 games. Last year, when Bale flopped, he had 22 in 44. Meanwhile, Marco Reus’ best season, when some were claiming him as one of the best in the world, was 23 goals in 45 games.

It is just interesting to see how things are written. Bale is a flop, whilst others, Hazard, Griezmann, Reus, di Maria had excellent seasons.

An Arsenal side with Bale Ozil Sanchez in behind Giroud would be electrifying and dangerous. Goals from out wide, and magic in the middle.

Gareth Bale needs to be our number one target.

Sign him, we win the league.

Walcott v Townsend (and Sturridge, Welbeck, Ox & Bale)

After 6 goals in 2 games, a lot of England fans have been asking the question “Will Walcott get back into the team.” Well, here is some breaking news. Yes he will.

The player currently occupying his position on the right hand side of a front 3 is flavour of the moment Andros Townsend. Some have claimed he is already better than Theo Walcott. Others say that he will become better than Theo Walcott. Both statements are a fallacy and as likely to come true as me getting below 12 stone. Do not believe me? Theo Walcott is currently 24, Andros Townsend 22. So that no one moans (usually from up the road in North London) I have made a fair comparison. What had Theo Walcott achieved up to the season when he was 22 years of age, due to turn 23, in comparison to Andros Townsend:

Walcott-Townsend

There is nothing to show in Andros Townsend past to prove the statement “Andros Townsend will become better than Theo Walcott”. And taking into account that the year after 2011/12 (my cut off year for Theo Walcott), he went on to score 21 goals and get 14 assists, it is also a fallacy that “Andros Townsend is better than Theo Walcott”. Townsend has 14 career goals. Walcott scored 21 in 1 season. I think some people need to learn the definition of the word ‘better’.

For a final note on this, Theo Walcott has had a ‘terrible’ start to the 2013/14 campaign, whilst Andros Townsend has had a brilliant start. Yet they have both scored just the 1 goal in all competitions, whilst Theo leads the assists 2 to 1. Just shows, Theo being useless so far is still better than Townsend’s best season so far.

Expanded this a little more, there are 3 attacking positions up for grabs in the England squad. In the last 2 games, they have been occupied by Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Andros Townsend. Now some are saying that these 3 will be the front 3 for the World Cup, and that all 3 are better than Theo Walcott. Well, lets look at some more stats: England Striker

For the 3 forward positions, there are 5 players in contention (Sorry Manchester United and Manchester City fans, but Ashley Young and James Milner are useless, as for Lennon, if he gets in, Townsend, the future of English football, won’t be there). I have also stuck Gareth Bale in the comparison just to see how the English players compare to the most expensive (and therefore surely the best?) player of all time.

What is obvious from the statistics is Daniel Sturridge is by far the best goalscorer and his lightning form justifies his selection. 17 goals in his last 2 seasons (28 games) is a decent return and whilst he might not be a World Class striker, he is certainly the best England have. As for the wide positions, the one that stands out, obviously, is Theo Walcott. The two statistics a wide forward needs to be judged on his goals and assists. In his career, he is pretty much level with Gareth Bale, and last season they also averaged a similar number. So how much does that make Walcott worth?

It also makes a mockery of people saying he will not get into the side. Last season, Townsend, Welbeck & Chamberlain scored 4 goals and got 9 assists between them. Theo got more than these on his own. Walcott has made the right wing his own at Arsenal, and will be one of the 1st names on the team sheet for England.

The other interesting comparison is between Welbeck, Townsend and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Welbeck currently has the left hand side, but he showed against Poland he is useless. Townsend is left footed, played most of his youth career on the left wing, but he broken through this year playing right wing. And Oxlade-Chamberlain played left wing at the last European Championship for England. It is clear it is between these 3 for the left wing position. So what do the stats say?

Over his career, Welbeck is the more effective, but interestingly, they all averaged around 5 games per goal/assist last campaign. When you consider Walcott averaged 1.3 and Sturridge 1.5, it is clear England’s left wing will be the week side of the attacking trio.

What is also interesting is how poor Oxlade-Chamberlain’s stats are. I have felt since joining Arsenal, his hype does not come through on his stats and 3 goals and 5 assists in his career perhaps highlight this. Although he is just 20 so the youngest of the group. And he has still got more goals and assists then the future of England, Andros Townsend, despite him being 2 years younger (which again makes a mockery of people calling Townsend ‘England’s Future and saying he is better than Theo Walcott).

If England can get the left wing sorted, and with Rooney playing in the hole with 3 ahead of him with pace and finishing ability, England could surprise a lot of people in Brazil. It would be a fairly exciting forward line!

Theo Walcott is nowhere near losing his England spot, least of all to Andros Townsend. And what is clear by the comparison’s is that he is every bit as effective when it comes to playing as a wide forward as Gareth Bale.

“We are on an upward spiral in terms of confidence and they are in a negative spiral in terms of results, to [get] out of that negative spiral is extremely difficult.”
– Andre Villas-Boas, 4 March 2013

Since Arsenal lost to Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane on the 3rd of March. A lot has happened;

  • Arsenal overturned a 7 point deficit to overhaul Spurs for the final Champions League spot
  • Gareth Bale, goal scorer that day, left Spurs
  • Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil

Since that day, Arsenal’s record reads P 18 W 15 D 2 L 1

Marseille 1-2 Arsenal
Sunderland 1-3 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham
Arsenal 2-0 Fenerbahce
Fulham 1-3 Arsenal
Fenerbahce 0-3 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa
Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 4-1 Wigan
QPR 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd
Fulham 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 0-0 Everton
Arsenal 3-1 Norwich
West Brom 1-2 Arsenal
Arsenal 4-1 Reading
Swansea 0-2 Arsenal
Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal

The only blot on that copy book is the Aston Villa defeat. What is certain is the form over the last 18 games is the form of a top, top team. The form of potential Champions. It is about time we get the credit, the respect, we deserve. No just from opposing fans and the media. But from ourselves. Let us start believing in ourselves. We have a very special set of players. Let us start believing in them.

Be the twelfth man.
