Oxlade-Chamberlain – How close is he to leaving Arsenal?

“Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain refuses to rule out move away from Arsenal”

That was the sensationalist head line that materialised from Oxlade-Chamberlain’s appearance with his dad on Goals on Sunday.

Before we get into the meat of this blog, let’s deal with a little bit of veg. Here is what Oxlade-Chamberlain actually said;

“I’d be lying if I wasn’t going to sit here and say that it has crossed my mind that I need more game time,” Oxlade-Chamberlain told Sky Sports. “As a footballer, you want to play every game. Me being myself, I’m not happy when I’m not playing.

“There is going to come a time in my career, and I think I’m approaching that, when I do need to be getting more regular football. But my focus completely and utterly now is on playing for Arsenal and still trying to break into the team when I get the opportunity, and help out if I have to come off the bench.”

“My sole aim for now is to help Arsenal and keep pushing myself to play in this team, because I love being at Arsenal. It’s a great club, it’s a great team and I’ve got a lot of faith in the team,” he said. “So I just want to keep focusing on that.

“But there is that in my mind that I do want to get more game time. There comes a time in your career where you have to re-evaluate things and think, ‘Is that going to be here or elsewhere?’

“I’m not there at the moment, I’m fully focused on this season, playing my part in that. When you get to the end of the season, just like managers do where they re-evaluate their team, players re-evaluate their personal situation, and I’ll do that at the end of the season.”

What he has said, and shown, is that he is a mature young man who is focused on his career. He could easily sit on the bench for Arsenal for the next 5 years, picking up a big wage, living the easy life, going Faces, Nu-Bar or wherever these young footballers go these days when they are average players (usually at Spurs) and want to go on the smash and pick up easy girls.

Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to play football. He wants to become the best that he can. He has not refused to rule out a move from Arsenal, but instead refused to accept sitting on the bench. He is clearly happy at Arsenal, but not happy about not playing. So let’s not go OTT with the “Oxlade-Chamberlain says ‘play or me or lose me’” stuff.

But what actually now for the career of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain?

He joined Arsenal for an initial payment of £12m from Southampton a few days short of his 18th birthday. He came with nearly as much hype as fellow Southampton academy prospect Theo Walcott. In fact, the rumours were he was better than Walcott.

In 2011, Walcott was under extreme pressure at Arsenal, from fans and media alike. He was 22 and struggling. As quick as he was, accusations were being thrown around that he lacked a football brain, could not cross, was poor technically, and his time at Arsenal was coming to an end.

A Southampton season ticket holder friend of mine described Oxlade-Chamberlain as “better technically than Walcott, not as much pace, but a better all round player”. And early evidence proved him to be correct.

A video posted to YouTube a few months after he had signed for Arsenal certainly gave a lot to be excited about.

March 2012, he put in his best performance in an Arsenal shirt to date. A fantastic performance in the Champions League against AC Milan, which saw Arsenal come so close to overturning a 4-0 deficit form the first leg. He was just 18.

Very much like Jack Wilshere, who’s best performance in an Arsenal shirt also came as a teenager in the Champions League, he has since gone on to disappoint. Unlike Wilshere, it is not just down to injury.

Now before you all start angrily replying on Facebook and Twitter “another youngster ruined by Le Fraud Wenger”, let’s stop chatting bollocks. Enough youngsters have come through over the years which show that Wenger does not ruin youngsters. It is merely a narrative created to suit an agenda of some very bitter people.

So what did go wrong with Oxlade-Chamberlain? Well he just did not progress.

He always struggled for fitness, always looking like he was puffing out of his arse after 60 minutes, always struggled to put a run of 5 starts together, the signs were there early on.

There was also always question marks over his best position. You get the feeling that he always felt he was better off playing in the middle, behind a striker, but with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla, Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil ahead of him, he usually found himself out wide. At which point he then drifted into the middle, getting in others way.

Oxlade-Chamberlain can beat a man for fun. It is what happens after he beats the man that causes the problem. He would then try and beat another. Then another. Until he gets to the point that he gets tackled. He would always try to beat one man too many.

Rather than beat the man, and play a simple pass to keep the play going, he would end up losing the ball, play breaking down. And it materialised that his crossing was no better than Theo Walcott, and his finishing worse.

He is in his 7th season at Arsenal. And has scored just 8 league goals in that time. The output from him is clearly not good enough.

Last season, he lost his place to Joel Campbell. This season we have seen the development of Alex Iwobi that is keeping him out of the first team.

What the development of these two has shown is just how average Oxlade-Chamberlain currently is. How little he has progressed.

Iwobi is just 20 years old, and is putting in more consistent performances, stringing together more games, than Oxlade-Chamberlain ever did.

He beats a man, plays a simple ball, before finding space to receive it once more. It is no surprise Iwobi is ahead of Oxlade-Chamberlain in the pecking order. He is a better, more effective player than Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain can do with looking at Iwobi and Campbell. Work out why they got in the team ahead of him. Their selfless play, their fitness, their desire.

Over the summer Arsene Wenger showed a ruthless streak. Selling Serge Gnabry to Germany, loaning out Joel Campbell to Spain. Whilst Oxlade-Chamberlain might try and engineer his own way out of Arsenal at the end of the season, there is also a high chance that he might be pushed.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain really does want a future at Arsenal, it is down to him, and only him. He is the master of his own destiny. If he does not prove himself when given the chance, he will soon find himself at West Ham.

Of course, he has already showed his desire to play football. and if he finds himself still struggling to break through at the end of the season, maybe a move to West Ham or the like will do him good, will re-energise his career. Playing week in week out for 90 minutes allowing him to prove himself.

Oxlade-Chamberlain days at Arsenal look to be numbered.

Nacho Monreal, Title Race, Liverpool v Man U & Mauro Icardi

Nacho Monreal

On Saturday I spoke about people moaning after a win. And that when you win, you should be out on the booze, enjoying yourself, rather than moaning online till midnight from your keyboard, this still does not mean that you can criticise constructively. and there is one players form this season that has been particularly worrying. That of Nacho Monreal.

Even before the weekends performance, where the defence looked ropy, there was already some concern around Nacho Monreal.

Not blessed with the extreme pace many a full back now has, he has always been more of a Bacary Sagna of the left. Strong defensively, strong positionally, and the ability to pass and cross. but this season he has struggled.

He has been beaten numerous times too easily on the outside. Average wingers seem to be blasting past him without much effort. And he seems to be diving into challenges with poor decision making. Perhaps a sign that he lacks confidence in himself. Committing early on to the challenge in the hope if he does not win the ball, at least he is being beat high up the pitch.

This leads to situations like the weekend, where he was beaten all too easily by some winger who I have never heard of, will never hear of again, and can’t even bother to Google who he was. The result was a simple tap in.

Some of the blame must be pointed to the man ahead of him, Alex Iwobi.

Iwobi has shown a lot going forward this season, and is fully deserving of a lot of hype and praise, but defensively he does not offer much. Monreal has been spoilt for the last two years having Alexis Sanchez ahead of him, and Iwobi needs to do a bit more.

But ultimately, it comes down to Monreal. He has had some average points in a decent Arsenal career so far, but recent performers show why Arsenal did consider signing a new left back in the summer.

I fully expect Kieran Gibbs to get a run out mid week in the Champions League.

Title Race

No matter how the press might report it, Arsenal are in the title race. And what a title race it is looking to be.

If Man U beat Liverpool tonight, there will be 3 points between 1st and 6th. It might only be 8 games in, ad without going down the Sky Sports hyperboil, we could be on the verge of a legendary title race.

It is the usual 6 suspects who are up there, but they would have got there in different ways, and can be cut into two groups.

Firstly you have the darlingsThese three teams have been “setting a thrilling Premier League pace.” Man City, Spurs and Liverpool.

Had you been on holiday to a far flung place where you get newspapers 2 weeks after they were printed, you’d think Man City were running away with it. That they were Champions Elect. But people have short memories. Last season they won their first 5 games. They finished 4th. This year they won their first 6 games. And have already been reeled back in.

We have that lot up the road. Unbeaten. Only conceded 1 goal from open play. The media are willing them on. Talk of an invincible season after just 8 games. Yet they sit 3rd.

Then we come onto Liverpool. Victory tonight sees them join the top 2 on 19 points. But the way the press have been going on, you would think that they had won 7 from 7 so far. They haven’t. They lost against Burnley…

We also have 3 crisis clubs. Although they are not really in a crisis.

Arsenal sit 2nd in the league on goal difference (joint top?) and continually to frustrate the bitter critics. Rumours last week were that Antonio Conte was about to be sacked. They are 3 points off top. And with all the talk of Jose Mourinho having an imbalanced squad and a useless captain who should be dropped by club and country, they could find themselves just 3 points off the lead by bedtime.

It is hotting up at the top.

Liverpool v Man U

Bit harsh of the Premier League to schedule a Monday night game during a Champions League week…

Mauro Icardi

With all the BS in the summer, one man got me a bit more excited than the other many, many men. That was Mauro Icardi. His age, his ability, his leadership, his playing style, he looked perfect for Arsenal. The deal was not done and Icardi is still an Inter player. Still Inter Milan’s captain.

His recently publish autobiography (he is 24, why does he have a book out? At least we now know it isn’t just an English problem) slammed the Inter Milan Ultra’s and put his future at the club in jeopardy.

Signing someone of Icardi’s talent in January could be a game changer. Could make Arsenal champions.

Arsenal beat Swansea – But not everyone is happy

132

So I didn’t watch the game. I am still enjoying a bit of downtime in Suffolk with some family enjoying the fresh air, visits to garden centres, walks in the meadows, the sort of boring stuff that people who don’t live in London do. But I must say I feel refreshed.

I caught some of it on TalkSPORT and, expectedly, the commentary was biased. Will come onto this later.

Another two goals for Theo Walcott and a cracking finish for Mesut “stealing a living” Ozil are clear highlights. The change in attitude and performances by Theo this season is incredible. He is back to the free scoring winger that was was in 2012/13.

img_7553
Walcott could have had a couple more (not the 6 more than TalkSPORT exegaratted too) but there is nothing to complaint about. And anyone who complains that he only scored 2 is a bit of a tosser.

Talking about tossers complaining. I see people moaning and arguing over the Granit Xhaka red card. Straight after the game. On Twitter.

https://twitter.com/highbury_74/status/787325315890745344

I completely agree with that. Arsenal won the game, went top, and yet all people can do is argue on Twitter. Go out. Have a beer. Celebrate with mates. Although I imagine those arguing are the usual drips who do not go to games, sit watching it on a dodgy laptop stream, wearing their new Arsenal shirt with Granit Xhaka on the back, screaming Wenger Out to the TV then spending all evening online. Oh, and they are #AgainstModernFootball too, despite being part of the problem.

That is probably why I have taken an enforced break from Twitter. Too many drips who think that are hard behind a screen, who cater to 14 year old Ahmed in Dubai, and get excited that a bunch of teenage boys like and RT their tweets. I am done on the platform for a bit. Agendas, keyboard warriors and liars spoiling the decent conversations.

Anyway, I have digressed. Back to the game. Back to The Arsenal.

Had you said after that Liverpool defeat, with no new CB or striker, that we would be sitting, after 8 games, level at the top of the league, I would have laughed at you.

Especially with Man City and the God-like Pep Guardiola running away with it, and Spurs being unbeaten – only they could unbeaten and be below Arsenal.

It is testament to the side, the management, and how we are moving forward.

Although the bitter British media seem to be crying into their free coffees.

After the result, Danny Gabbidon, he of WBA, Cardiff, West Ham, QPR, Crystal Palace and Pateng, gave the summary. And I will summarise to the best of my memory.

“This result shows why Arsenal are not title contenders. Any decent team would have stuck 6 or 8 past this Swansea team. They were awful defensively and lucky to win. They are not title contenders.”

This weekend, Arsenal won, the champions were spanked, the league leaders held to a draw, and the only unbeaten side in the league failed to win against WBA.

Arsenal were the only side in the top 3 to win.  Yet it is Arsenal’s result which shows why they are not champion material?

Down to 10 men and hanging on for a win. Any other side would have shown their “championship credentials”. But not Arsenal. Not with the biased British media.

So fuck you Danny Gabbidon. Fuck you British media. And fuck you moaning Arsenal fans who moan about everything. Tossers the lot of you.
