The Arsenal and Me – Jenny’s story

These days I can’t imagine my life without The Arsenal.

I have to thank my brother for getting me into football. When I was around 10 or 11 I would always see him watching the EPL highlights show on TV which got me interested.

At the start of 2004 I felt like I needed to choose a team and since I didn’t know much about football, I chose the team at the top of the ladder (and what a season to pick from).

The first time I got to watch a full Arsenal game was the 2005 FA Cup final versus Manchester United. I was so excited I even recorded the game on VHS. My understanding of football wasn’t great back then but I was just happy Arsenal won that day.

The next few years involved checking the scores, reading the match reports and watching the occasional Champions League or FA Cup game (which was the only games you could watch on free to air TV in Australia).

In 2009 I finally got pay TV and I was able to watch my first EPL game. I was so excited.  I’m pretty sure it was when Arsenal beat Blackburn 4-0. And ever since then my love for Arsenal grew stronger.

The first jersey I bought was from the Sunday market. It was a cheap imitation of the 2007/08 one with Fabregas on the back which didn’t even fit me. I didn’t even care that it didn’t fit me I was just excited that I was able to buy my first jersey. However when I was old enough to finally buy Arsenal merchandise online it has been a constant purchases ever since including mugs, stationary, key rings and of course jerseys.

Being an Arsenal fan in Australia has been difficult with the ridiculous time differences. Staying up late to watch EPL games at 2am or getting up early to watch the Champions League at 6:45am sometimes does suck when you have work or uni but you eventually get used to it.

The question that I have gotten the most from friends who don’t like football is:

“I don’t know how you can wake up at 3 or 4am in the morning just to watch a football game”.

I always reply, “Because I love Arsenal”.

10 Reasons why we will beat Marsellie+ starting XI

1.. Chesney, another clean sheet on Saturday. He has now only let in 1 goal in his last 5 games.

2.. Seems pointless picking out the defenders for individual praise now, they are all working very well as a unit and would make George Graham proud with the offside trap. All that is missing is them putting their hands up and clapping the Ref and Lino once the right call has been made.

3.. Flamini is available, I just hope Wenger doesn’t make the mistake of playing him and Arteta. It Doesn’t work, much the same as chicken with cheese doesn’t work.

4.. Wilshere, whilst it was good to see him get a full 90mins in on Saturday he still doesn’t look totally match fit and at his best.

5.. Theo, wasn’t really upto much in his short cameo appearance on Saturday Vs his boyhood team. I’d like to see him start and make more of an impression this game.

6.. Ozil lots of people have been having a moan up saying he has been quiet lately, but hes working hard, covering plenty of ground and this is the kind of game he will shine in.

7.. Ramsey, by far our best player this season and even if he gets pushed wide by Wenger he puts in a shift, his back flick which hit the post Vs Southampton was a touch of pure class. With Theo back let’s hope he get’s put in his best position, down the middle.

8.. Marseille domestically are doing okay, but just okay. Winning 7 out of 14 games so far but drawing 3 and losing 4, With a goal diff of plus 7. That leaves them 10 points off the pace of current leaders PSG. in the Champions League group they are the whipping boys managing to lose all 4 games so far.

9.. Giroud, I’m so happy he got a poachers kind of goal at the weekend and as for his head/eyes/body/foot fake for the penalty, well just pure class.

10.. Wenger KNows, a win could put us into the next round, lose and we could face a tricky last game away.

Likely starting XI – Cheseny, Sagna. BFG, Kos, Gibbs, Arteta, Ramsey, Santi, Ozil, Theo, Giroud

COME ON THE ARSENAL !!!!

“We are on an upward spiral in terms of confidence and they are in a negative spiral in terms of results, to [get] out of that negative spiral is extremely difficult.”
– Andre Villas-Boas, 4 March 2013

Since Arsenal lost to Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane on the 3rd of March. A lot has happened;

  • Arsenal overturned a 7 point deficit to overhaul Spurs for the final Champions League spot
  • Gareth Bale, goal scorer that day, left Spurs
  • Arsenal signed Mesut Ozil

Since that day, Arsenal’s record reads P 18 W 15 D 2 L 1

Marseille 1-2 Arsenal
Sunderland 1-3 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham
Arsenal 2-0 Fenerbahce
Fulham 1-3 Arsenal
Fenerbahce 0-3 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa
Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 4-1 Wigan
QPR 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 1-1 Man Utd
Fulham 0-1 Arsenal
Arsenal 0-0 Everton
Arsenal 3-1 Norwich
West Brom 1-2 Arsenal
Arsenal 4-1 Reading
Swansea 0-2 Arsenal
Bayern Munich 0-2 Arsenal

The only blot on that copy book is the Aston Villa defeat. What is certain is the form over the last 18 games is the form of a top, top team. The form of potential Champions. It is about time we get the credit, the respect, we deserve. No just from opposing fans and the media. But from ourselves. Let us start believing in ourselves. We have a very special set of players. Let us start believing in them.

Be the twelfth man.
