Stop sucking the fun out of football

132There are a lot of things I hate about modern day football. Ticket prices, the lack of connection between clubs and fans, attention seekers who try to become YouTube / twitter celebrities, no beer at half time, LadBible fans, the PC brigade censoring our songs, no standing, no swearing. Basically no fun.

And it has become worse over recent weeks. Pundits and other fans have attempted to suck the last bit of fun out of being a football supporter.

We are no longer allowed to take the micky out of other sides when they lose.

Firstly we had last weekend. Spurs lost 5-1. To a team who were down to 10 men. Who were already relegated. And it resulted in Arsenal finishing above Spurs for the 21st season in a row. And how we laughed. How we celebrated. And how we laughed even more.

But then the fun police appeared.

Robbie Savage on 606;

“They left Highbury all those years ago to compete with the best in Europe,” he told 606. “[Instead] they’ve scraped past Tottenham, are ten points behind Leicester City, and they’re celebrating. It’s ridiculous.”

So according to Robbie Savage, we can not celebrate finishing above our local rivals, on the last day of the season, in sensational style. Don’t have fun.

Ian Wright also got in on the act;

“Those Arsenal fans should be thinking about what could have been, not what is.”

Taking into account the passion he showed in an Arsenal shirt, and the hatred he often showed for the likes of Spurs, Man U and The FA, I was surprised by his comment.

You would think Wrighty would understand the passion of the fan. But no, he missed the point. Arsenal were not celebrating finishing 2nd. We know it was a missed opportunity. We were laughing at Spurs, and celebrating at finishing above them. Again. The wheels coming off. Again.

We have previously seen it with the likes of Roy Keane, Jamie Carragher and others. Trying to dictate from a TV studio how fans should celebrate. How they should release their passion. How they should have fun.

According to these, you should only celebrate your own team doing well, and the only thing Arsenal can do well is win the league. Nothing else should be enjoyed.

On Sunday, we should have all gone home. Turned off the radio and TV, sat in a dark room and cried. We should not have been out having a drink up in the sun with our pals. Laughing at Tottenham. Singing It’s happened again. No having fun.

And then last night, how we all laughed at Liverpool.

1-0 up at half time and cruising. To then see 11 men go missing in the second half and Sevilla run riot in a 3-1 victory.

Most people had a laugh. Mocked the Scouser’s. Took pleasure in their defeat.

But then the fun police reappeared.

Should Arsenal fan’s be laughing won they won F*** All?

Klopp has done more this season than Wenger in 7 years, why are you mocking him?

There were plenty of similar things said last night on Twitter.

Apparently, we should not mock Liverpool for losing a cup final despite being ahead because we did not make one.

It seems the footballing world has gone mad. We as fans are no longer allowed to have fun at other clubs expense.

Part of football is not just seeing your own team do well, but seeing other teams fail. Watching their fans cry on the tele.CixDD_NWYAM8nR4

I take tremendous joy in seeing kids in Tottenham shirts crying on the TV. I love seeing grown men crying on the terraces. I laugh watching vines of bingo winged women celebrating a non-existent goal at Newcastle.

Football is joyful. It is a release. Look at Birmingham City fans. Despite being in the Championship, finishing 10th, they loved Aston Villa getting relegated.

Please, pundits and fellow fans, stop trying to take the fun out of football. Stop trying to dictate how and when fans should celebrate.

If Crystal Palace win on Saturday. I will laugh. It does not matter that Arsenal did not make the final.

Liverpool

So what last night 1 point gained or two points lost?

Certainly before the game, a draw would not have been a bad result. And having gone 1-0 and 2-1 down within the first 19 minutes, I am sure many would have been happy with a draw. However, going into the 90th minute leading, we should have seen the game out. So in the end, it was 2 points lost.

In the last 13 games between Arsenal and Liverpool, there have been 8 goals in the 90th minute or later. So it should not have been a surprise to anyone that there was late drama last night.

It was frustrating to concede so late once more. A lot of fingers have been pointed at Arsene Wenger & Mikel Arteta. Wenger for his substitutions, Arteta for his performance.

Firstly on the subs, yes, by taking off Ozil, Walcott and Campbell for Arteta, Gibbs & Oxlade-Chamberlain, we were going defensive, and it was sitting back that eventually cost us. However, had we kept the attacking players on, and drew 3-3, we would also be moaning that Wenger messed up the substitutes and should have bought on defensive reinforcements.

Yes, Campbell was putting in a shift defensively, but anyone watching the game could see he was blowing out his arse by the time he came off. The Gibbs substitution is always one I like as he can assist in attack, but is obviously a natural left back so adds defensive cover. It just did not work this time around.

As for Arteta, it is a little bit cruel to blame him. Yes, we could have bought on Chambers in the middle, or Gabriel and gone with 5 at the back, but in Arteta, you get the added bonus of his ball retention. To blame a player who was only on the pitch for 6 minutes really is having an agenda. The goal he could do nothing for. A long ball deep into the box from the left. Blame the centre backs for not clearing it, or the keeper for getting down slow. Don’t blame Arteta.

Where I would blame Wenger is the 87th minute substitution. This is a tactic he often employs. But it confuses me. Do it on the 90th minute. When we are already into injury time. That way we can waste a little bit more time.

As for the result, in the end, whilst it did leave a bitter taste in the mouth, we did not concede any ground to our title rivals (I do not count Leicester as a rival). Manchester City drew at home, we drew away. Yes, we missed a chance to go 6 points clear of City, but part of me was expecting us to concede the lead in the league to them last night.

In a mid-week set of fixtures where Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs & Everton all failed to win, one thing is for certain, there are plenty more points be dropped this season.

Finally, well played to all those who travelled last night. It was just the 2nd league game I have missed this season (the 1st being Southampton away on Boxing Day). No trains, lot’s of traffic, and getting home at around 3am. I take my hat off to you. You did not stop singing. Our away fans are definitely the best in the league. See you all at Stoke!

Mohamed Elneny

So Arsene Wenger confirmed last night that Mohamed Elneny has finally joined the club. Speaking after the 3-3 draw at Liverpool, Wenger said: “He has joined us and we will see if he can qualify for Sunday.”

Again, people have had a moan up about how long it has taken for him to join. Clearly these people have never attempted to get a work visa anywhere. I would say the couple of weeks it has taken Arsenal is fairly quick compared to if an Egyptian worker in ‘normal life’ attempted to get a work visa. They would wait months.

Transfer take time. Unfortunately in this era of instant news, social media, and hits for cash, ewe have become impatient. The blogs and news outlets continually writing articles daily about him being ‘close’ just to get the hits for their advertising revenue is the biggest evil.

Those fantastic journalists at The Metro have published 36 articles about Elneny in the last 7 days. Deals do not take a long time to complete, they just seem that way due to how much crap we have to read through.

Let the transfer progress at their natural speed. You would be an idiot to think that the club are incompetent enough that they delay transfers to damage the club. I am sure if the Elneny deal could have been done earlier, it would have been.

As for the player himself, I know nothing about him, and most of you probably also know nothing about him. I have not even watched his Welcome to Arsenal video on YouTube yet. I probably won’t either. What is for sure, it is a reinforcement nice and early in January where we need players. Will he start against Stoke City? Probably not. But I am sure we will see him come off the bench, and hopefully he can be key to our title run in.

Alexis Sanchez

More good news for Arsenal fans. Alexis Sanchez is likely to return against Stoke City. Like Elneny, it is not hugely clear if he will be fit to start, or eased in from the bench. If I was a betting man, I would go for the latter. Although this is Sanchez. Put him on the bench for the first 60 minutes and he will probably spend its entirety  warming up.

He is a class player and hopefully the enforced rest should see him 100% for the run in to the league title. His return is key as Ozil, despite still getting loads of assists in recent games, has gone off the boil a bit. Hopefully Sanchez back in the side will give Ozil that bit more space to work, and vice versa.

The odd thing is, we have not actually missed Sanchez. Since he picked up his injury against Norwich at the end of November, Arsenal’s form reads:

WWWWLWWWD

Not bad for a one man team hey!

Whilst he has not been missed, it will be brilliant to get him back as it gives us options, both in the starting 11, and coming off the bench.

A return to the starting 11 will enable us to use Theo Walcott as a striker once more, giving us the option of Olivier Giroud on the bench. Or alternatively mean that either Walcott or Joel Campbell are on the bench, alongside Oxlade-Camberlain, pretty much doubling our attacking options to bring on.

It will be good to have you back Alexis.

Olivier Giroud

Yesterday I was looking at the top scorers market. Olivier Giroud was 20/1. Another two goals last night puts him on 12 for the season, 5th in the Premier League.Giroud v top 5

When you compare him up against the what you probably class as the Premier Leagues Premier Strikers, all of whom he has scored more against this season, his stats still hold up.Giroud v top 5 other

He clearly is not the lamppost that many people would make out that he is.

Weekend of unpredictable results brings perspective to Arsenal fans

Stoke City 2 – 0 Manchester City
Manchester United 0-0 West Ham
West Brom 1-1 Tottenham
Chelsea 0-1 Bournemouth
Newcastle 2 – 0 Liverpool

What a set of results. Anyone who says the have predicted that 5 of England’s premier sides would fail to win their game would be a liar. Even more unbelievable when 4 of the 5 opponents started Saturday in the bottom half of the table.

The Premier League this year is so unpredictable. From day one with West Ham beating Arsenal at away (and also going on to beat Liverpool, Man City & Chelsea), it has been a gamblers nightmare.

What this weekends results should do for Arsenal fans is bring in a little bit of perspective.

Two awful results against Norwich and WBA looked to have derailed our season. Yet we sit here, in December, 2 points off top behind Leicester. Who themselves are showing how unpredictable the league is. Favourites to be relegated, now in the title race.

So Arsenal failed to beat Norwich and WBA, taking just 1 point from the two away games, despite taking the lead. It was not good enough. Made even worse by the injuries we sustained – Arsenal suffering an injury crisis perhaps the only thing predictable this season.

The reaction by many to these results was way over the top. And this weekends results show just why.

“A game they should win”. To an extent, this statement is often true. Norwich and WBA away are games Arsenal should win. But as they say, football is not won on paper (or more recently, on computer screens). And whilst there are games certain teams really should win, that does not mean that they will win it.

In recent weeks, Manchester City have lost to Stoke and drawn with Aston Villa. Games that they really should win. They did not.

Spurs whilst on their longest unbeaten run in their history (14 games) have failed to beat Leicester, Swansea and the aforementioned WBA. Games they really should win.

And Manchester United have only won 2 of their last 6 games. Dropping points against the likes of Leicester, West Ham and Crystal Palace. Games they really should win.

And do not even get me started on Chelsea…As much as Leicester rise was unpredictable, Chelsea demise is equally so.

It seems every time Arsenal fail to win, the whif of crisis comes across the club. It is on Twitter. In the media. In the crowd. And it is a massive overreaction.

The fact is, the mid table teams, the likes of West Ham, Crystal Palace, Swansea, Leicester and Stoke have massively closed the gap between themselves and the top sides.

The likes of Shaqiri, Payet, Mahrez, Cabaye and Ayew. Who would have thought a few years ago that these talents would be playing for Premier League sides, who would settle for mid table mediocrity?

Of course, this is all to do with the money floating about in the game right now. These clubs can offer salaries that the likes of Sevilla, Wolfsburg & Marseille can only dream of.

These players coming into the Premier League has created the unpredictability of results we now see.

Even as I write this, Georginio Wijnaldum has just scored Newcastle’s second as they take apart Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Newcastle able to sign the captain of PSV, who at one stage was one of the brightest young players in Holland. Newcastle scored 2 with just 1 shot on target. Where has we heard that before recently?

Football games are not won on paper. If you want predictability, go and support PSG in Ligue 1. Currently 15 points clear. Or Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Who only just lost their first league game this season. And have scored 48 league goals already. 14 points ahead of 3rd.

Whilst you are right to want Arsenal to win every game. It is incorrect to expect us to win every game.

Arsenal will drop more points this season. They will fail to win more games that they really should win. But so will other teams.

So let’s use this weekends run of results as a bit of perspective. Calling for Gary Monk every time Arsenal fail to get 3 points. OK. Tweeting things like “Klopp wouldn’t have lost that game”. These will only make you look an idiot in the long wrong.

Mourinho, Pellegrini, Pochettino, van Gaal & Klopp all failed to win this weekend. Do they not tactics?

Teams will win games they should not win. Lose games they should not lose.

Get over it.
