Which Premier League side has the most exciting players at its disposal?

132

Some people will say I have been a little obsessed with Liverpool this season. My constant pointing out that we are above them this weekend, despite according to the press them being the best side since a team of Allied prisoners of drew 4-4 with a German team in 1981.

My comments have been partly in jest, but also to point out the influence the media have on peoples opinions and the fact that brilliant Liverpool are behind Arsenal, and only a single point ahead of crisis club (according to the media) Chelsea.

Liverpool are massively overhyped, and I have no shame in continually pointing it out. Then a few days ago this was published: Premier League front-runners: Who has what it takes to finish top?

Within the pointless article created just to generate hits (which I have then increased by linking to it within this blog), was a comment about Liverpool:

Yes, you read that right, Jurgen Klopp, apparently, has the Premier League’s most exciting team at his disposal.

28 goals have been scored in Liverpool’s games this season. The league high. So on paper, with Liverpool 4th, they must be lighting up the Premier League. But then 10 of those have been goals conceded by Liverpool. So it is not as much Liverpool playing exciting football, more that they are involved in exciting games due to an inability to defend.

This weeks 0-0 draw with Man U was the first time this season they had kept a clean sheet in the league. And 13 of the 18 goals they have scored this season have been in just 3 games. And in only 2 of the 8 games have they won by more than a single goal.

Moving on so I do not look too obsessed, the comments in the Mail about Liverpool got me thinking. Who actually does have the most exciting team in the Premier League.

Now to narrow it down, let’s look at the front 4, as essentially, that is where the magic happens:

Manchester City: Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Raheem Sterling

Arsenal: Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi

Tottenham: Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Dele Alli, Christian Ericksen

Liverpool: Firmino, Coutinho, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana

Chelsea: Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, Willian, Oscar

Everton: Romelu Lukaku, Yannick Bolasie, Kevin Mirallas, Ross Barkley

Man U: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford

Starting at the top, Manchester City’s front 4, when fit, is electric. Pace, power and precision. Expensively assembled, there is not a weak link.

In Sanchez and Ozil, Arsenal have 2 players who can rival Aguero and de Bruyne in terms of ability and influence. Theo Walcott is in the form of his life and Alex Iwobi is the most exciting youngster in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s front four is a mixture of flicks, tricks and free kicks. Son is like a poor mans Sanchez. Like Liverpool, they have been described recently as the most exciting team in the Premier League, but with 13 scored and just 4 conceded, they are a side built on defending, not attacking.

As for Liverpool, it just screams out average. Firmino is a good player, but not where near as good as Aguero and Sanchez. Coutinho is the most overrated player in the league who scores the odd wonder goal, but does very little else in terms of output. Sadio Mane is streaky, and Lallana is average.

Diego Costa is currently the Premier League top scorer. Eden Hazard is still failing to hit the heights of a few years ago. And Willian is like Coutinho, scores a few wonder goals.

Everton’s front 4 is actually interesting. In Lukaku they have someone who really should be playing at a higher level. Bolaise is exciting to watch, but doesn’t score or assist many. Good for the highlights reel and Soccer AM crowd. I have always like Mirallas, and Ross Barkley is another one who will score the odd great goal, but is inconsistent.

On paper, Man U have a group of exciting players and exciting youth. By Ibrahimovic is past it and struggling with the pace of the Premier League, the most excitement Pogba has delivered this season is in his adverts and hair cuts, Martial is a talent, and Rashford is highly rated due to his passport (imagine if Iwobi was still English?).

So who has the most exciting players at their disposal in the Premier League? For me it is Manchester City. Hot on their tails Arsenal:

Manchester City
Arsenal
Chelsea
Everton
Liverpool
Man U
Spurs

Nacho Monreal, Title Race, Liverpool v Man U & Mauro Icardi

Nacho Monreal

On Saturday I spoke about people moaning after a win. And that when you win, you should be out on the booze, enjoying yourself, rather than moaning online till midnight from your keyboard, this still does not mean that you can criticise constructively. and there is one players form this season that has been particularly worrying. That of Nacho Monreal.

Even before the weekends performance, where the defence looked ropy, there was already some concern around Nacho Monreal.

Not blessed with the extreme pace many a full back now has, he has always been more of a Bacary Sagna of the left. Strong defensively, strong positionally, and the ability to pass and cross. but this season he has struggled.

He has been beaten numerous times too easily on the outside. Average wingers seem to be blasting past him without much effort. And he seems to be diving into challenges with poor decision making. Perhaps a sign that he lacks confidence in himself. Committing early on to the challenge in the hope if he does not win the ball, at least he is being beat high up the pitch.

This leads to situations like the weekend, where he was beaten all too easily by some winger who I have never heard of, will never hear of again, and can’t even bother to Google who he was. The result was a simple tap in.

Some of the blame must be pointed to the man ahead of him, Alex Iwobi.

Iwobi has shown a lot going forward this season, and is fully deserving of a lot of hype and praise, but defensively he does not offer much. Monreal has been spoilt for the last two years having Alexis Sanchez ahead of him, and Iwobi needs to do a bit more.

But ultimately, it comes down to Monreal. He has had some average points in a decent Arsenal career so far, but recent performers show why Arsenal did consider signing a new left back in the summer.

I fully expect Kieran Gibbs to get a run out mid week in the Champions League.

Title Race

No matter how the press might report it, Arsenal are in the title race. And what a title race it is looking to be.

If Man U beat Liverpool tonight, there will be 3 points between 1st and 6th. It might only be 8 games in, ad without going down the Sky Sports hyperboil, we could be on the verge of a legendary title race.

It is the usual 6 suspects who are up there, but they would have got there in different ways, and can be cut into two groups.

Firstly you have the darlingsThese three teams have been “setting a thrilling Premier League pace.” Man City, Spurs and Liverpool.

Had you been on holiday to a far flung place where you get newspapers 2 weeks after they were printed, you’d think Man City were running away with it. That they were Champions Elect. But people have short memories. Last season they won their first 5 games. They finished 4th. This year they won their first 6 games. And have already been reeled back in.

We have that lot up the road. Unbeaten. Only conceded 1 goal from open play. The media are willing them on. Talk of an invincible season after just 8 games. Yet they sit 3rd.

Then we come onto Liverpool. Victory tonight sees them join the top 2 on 19 points. But the way the press have been going on, you would think that they had won 7 from 7 so far. They haven’t. They lost against Burnley…

We also have 3 crisis clubs. Although they are not really in a crisis.

Arsenal sit 2nd in the league on goal difference (joint top?) and continually to frustrate the bitter critics. Rumours last week were that Antonio Conte was about to be sacked. They are 3 points off top. And with all the talk of Jose Mourinho having an imbalanced squad and a useless captain who should be dropped by club and country, they could find themselves just 3 points off the lead by bedtime.

It is hotting up at the top.

Liverpool v Man U

Bit harsh of the Premier League to schedule a Monday night game during a Champions League week…

Mauro Icardi

With all the BS in the summer, one man got me a bit more excited than the other many, many men. That was Mauro Icardi. His age, his ability, his leadership, his playing style, he looked perfect for Arsenal. The deal was not done and Icardi is still an Inter player. Still Inter Milan’s captain.

His recently publish autobiography (he is 24, why does he have a book out? At least we now know it isn’t just an English problem) slammed the Inter Milan Ultra’s and put his future at the club in jeopardy.

Signing someone of Icardi’s talent in January could be a game changer. Could make Arsenal champions.

Arsenal to learn from England

132Over recent weeks, there has been plenty of chatter as to what formation Arsenal should play next season. From 433 to 4-diamond-2 (4D2) to a return to 4141.

England are currently having an internal battle as to what formation to go for with both 433 and 4D2 as the preferred systems of Roy Hodgson. Based on last nights diabolical performance against England, which Arsene Wenger was at Wembley to watch, a lot can be learned.

If you play the diamond, you are playing narrow. You need 2 full backs who will bomb forward and act as both wingers and full backs. They provide the width.

A beautiful sparkling diamond on a light reflective surface. 3d image. Isolated white background.

For England, in Danny Rose and Kyle Walker, they have full backs who’s attacking ability is better than their defensive. This need to attack could be why Arsenal are looking at Ricardo Rodriguez.

Nacho Monreal is brilliant defensively, but he does not have the blistering pace to get back when bombing forward, unlike Hector Bellerin on the right.

Also with the diamond, the full back’s get through a lot of work. They will need to be rotated and rested, a bit like Spurs have done this season. You can easily therefore accommodate 4 full backs who are all good enough to start.

The midfield is where Arsenal and Arsene would have learnt the most yesterday.

If you play the diamond, space in the middle of the park will be minimal. You therefore need players who can find space, and pass, in tight positions.

Last night England failed at this. Eric Dier, Dele Alli, James Milner and Wayne Rooney was the midfield 4. Non are technically gifted footballers.

Eric Dier is a centre back playing central midfield. He does a brilliant job for Spurs sitting between the two centre backs when they drop wide to cover for the full backs. But he is not a ball player. He will not get involved in the build up. In the diamond, you are looking at possession football, and that is not Dier’s game.

Moving forward to Dele Alli. He is a terrifically instinctive player. His touch and flick on the side line yesterday was one of the few highlights of the game last night. But it also sums it up. Brilliant skill followed by a poor pass that was easily cut out.

Dele Alli is simply not the type of player who is getting pick up the ball in the middle of the park, get his head up, and play defence splitting pass. Or on the other side, get the double under pressure, and lay it off 5 yards. It is not his game. His 75% pass completion rate in the Premier League shows he gives the ball away too much.

Compare him to Aaron Ramsey, who’s pass completion last year was 86% and we moan he gives the ball away too much!

The other side of the diamond was James Milner. Mr Average. Does not have any real weaknesses. But does not have any real strengths. Will put in a shift for 90 minutes. But that is about it. He is not suited for the diamond.

And then we have Wayne Rooney. He will go down as an all time England great. No matter what some say. But he is not a number 10.

Those who have watched him will always point out his weakness is his first touch. And in the Number 10 role, you need that to be exceptional.

He will put in the shift, like the other 3, but when it comes down to finesse, he does not have it. He is like a bull dozer.

So Arsenal would have learnt a lot in what personnel to play.

Luckily for Arsenal, there are plenty of footballers already in the middle of the park. Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil are all comfortable on the ball and combined would slice through most defences.

Even the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny are better passers than anything England played last night. And Granit Xhaka at the base of the diamond would be comfortable starting the attacks.

Also in the diamond, the midfield will rotate, so you need all 4 to be comfortable on the ball as the lad at the bottom of the diamond could soon find himself at the top. Xhaka would do that.

It is only Francis Coquelin who would struggle in this system.

You need your players to also be attack minded and postitionally aware. Too often last night James Milner was too deep. Barely getting out of his half.

Dele Alli spent to too much time operating too wide.

England needed someone like Jack Wilshere to keep the quick play going through the middle, and the side came into life when he came on. A middle finger up to those who claim Danny Drinkwater should be playing instead.

The diamond midfield is an option for Arsenal next year, but we need to watch England and learn from their mistakes in personnel and positioning.
