Time for train companies to be fair to football fans

Firstly allow me to start this blog off with an apology. Yesterday was the first day since the new site went up that their was not a blog. I blame National Rail for it as no trains back to London from Swansea after 7.30 meant The Arsenal away support had to spend the night in Wales. And what a night it was.

Millions of football fans travel up and down the country each week for football. Whether it is Arsenal fans using the London Underground to Finsbury Park, Manchester United fans getting a Virgin train out of Euston to go to Old Trafford, or the loyal away fans of every club getting a train from which far fetched corner of the country they live to whichever far fetched country they are going to. Football fans are hugely reliant on public transport.

The private companies running the trains also benefit big time from football fans. Were it not for football fans, there trains would be nearly empty of a weekend. I would estimate that football fans put over £100 million into the pockets of these train companies. We are key customers for them.

Therefore, I am questioning why we are treated so badly by the train companies. I will not mention the awful British Transport Police, as we all know they create more problems than they solve. It is the train companies themselves who get right up my goat.

The last 2 away days have been to Sunderland and Swansea. And what a nightmare they have been for the travelling fans. At Sunderland, you have to get the train from Newcastle to get back to London. East Coast trains decided to schedule their last train out of Newcastle to London at 5.50pm. This gave fans less than an hour to get out of the stadium, walk to either Sunderland or St Peters Station, do the 20 minute tram to Newcastle, walk to Newcastle station, buy beer and find the train. Talking to a few supporters, they were leaving the game 10 minutes early to ensure they got this train. Failure to do so would have resulted in a 5 hour 3 train journey taking you via Sheffield & Loughborough before getting into London at midnight.

It would have been very easy for the train companies to put on 1 more train at around 6.15, just to ease the pressure. Make life a little easier. But they did not.I bet if One Direction were playing in the Gateshead Arena they would have done, or if the athletics was on there would have been an extra train, but when it comes to football fans…no chance. The Sunderland train ticket cost us nearly £100 – more on this later.

This was not a unique experience. As mentioned, we had to stay in Swansea due to the lack of public transport after the game. The last train out of Swansea was at 19.32. Impossible to get unless you left early. All that was needed was a train 15-20 minutes later and everyone would have been all right.

But no, the train companies do not treat football fans like human beings. They clearly have a ‘stuff you’ attitude. Knowing that fans will attempt to get to the game not matter what, they become inflexible and do not do anything to help a fan out.

Then we come to the cost. The average away game outside of London costs £50-£100 to get to. When you take into the rising cost of ticket prices, you are looking at an away day now costing between £150-£200 once you add in food and a couple of drinks. I went to Benidorm for a week, all inclusive, including flights, for £250 a few years back.

And flights is another thing. Easy Jet, Ryan Air, British Airways, and more, all hyke the price of a flight up when it comes to away fans. Return tickets for Dortmund were north of £200 within minutes of the scheduling being announced. If you went another random mid-week, it would cost £50. How can they justify this? If it was not football fans, the European Commission would be getting involved and telling these companies that they can not fix prices like this.

And again, the airline operators should be grateful. If it was not for football, they would not sell any flights to Naples on a Tuesday from London. Rather then be happy with a few extra bob made from a football game, they have become greedy, knowing some fans will pay whatever just to go to the game. It is unfair.

Luckily we live in London, so can get nearly anywhere without too many changes. I do feel for fans over other clubs who often have to come into London just to get elsewhere. Adding to the cost and time.

Train companies, stop scheduling non-essential engineering works on match days. Put on later trains. And everyone stop putting up prices and screwing every penny out of football fans.

It is time the train companies helped the football fans out. Continually screwing them over is not good for anyone. They need us. We need them.

Ps: the ironic thing is I’ve written this whilst my train has been delayed by 30 minutes due to overrunning engineering works between Clapham Junction and Twickenham.

Ramsey, Mertesacker, Ozil, Cazorla and More

So just a few thoughts this morning on a few things Arsenal…

Aaron Ramsey

I have already professed my admiration for Aaron Ramsey in a previous blog where I made the claim that he is a future Arsenal captain. I will not go over old ground again, other than to say he is continuing to progress and, with 5 goals in 6 games, is now adding the much missed goals to his game. I remember when he played against England and dominated Frank Lampard & Steven Gerrard. Were Ramsey English, there would be plenty of hype around him. With the goals now added to his game, if he continues his progression, he will become a better player then Lampard and Gerrard.

Per Mertesacker

‘He has no pace’ people moaned. ‘We can get better’ they complained. ‘He is awful’ was the consensus by man. However, you do not win 93 caps for a nation such as Germany  at 28 by being a poor player. Anyone who fully understands football could see he is a brilliant player. Positioning and leadership. Who needs pace if you are impossible to get around? It is often said you only realise how good a player is when he is not playing, and the talk on the train after Sunderland was how much we missed the big man. The defence lacked organisation and leadership without him. With Koscielny giving away is 53rd penalty in an Arsenal shirt just highlighting that Per Mertesacker is head and shoulders above any other Arsenal centre back. In my opinion, he is the best defender in the league. Make your judgement on watching him play, not on playing with him on FIFA.

Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla

Against Sunderland, we got a glimpse of what Mesut Ozil can do. Always in space. Always ready to receive the ball. A brilliant touch. Brilliant vision. A fantastic assist for the 1st goal, and well involved for the 3rd. He might of tired towards the end but he showed what £42.5million gets you. Now add Santi Cazorla into the mix and the excitement is mouth watering. These two could propel us to the title. They will set up goals for fun. And with Oliver Giroud now having the confidence to go alongside his ability, he would get 30 goals plus. For me, we now have the most creative midfield in the Premier League.

Theo Walcott

Theo got a lot of criticism during the Sunderland game. Two missed chances (I will not count the header) and people were on his back. Let me get a few things straight. Neither chance was clear cut. The angle was against him and Westwood made 2 good saves. Last year, Theo Walcott got 21 goals and 14 assists. He is a very good player. After criticism playing for England, we as Arsenal fans need to back him. He is a massive confidence player. Get off his back. Sing his name. And he will start scoring again. Look at Ramsey as an example. Part of the reason he is improving is confidence. Let us not get on Theo’s back. It will not help him, it will not help Arsenal. Leave your boo’s and criticism to the pubs after the game.

British Transport Police

Brilliant job by the British Transport Police on the train back from Sunderland yesterday. There was no hint of anything until they came along. Then in their own special, antagonizing way, created an issue and tension where there was no need. Do they have a quota to fill? Do they have to show they have stopped and searched a certain amount of football fans on a game day? Getting told to stop signing is ludicrous. It is not illegal to sing. Chap on our train was right, rugby act worse. Are noisier. Drink more. Yet the police do nothing with the tarquin’s. Renditions from us of ‘Swing Low’ and The National Anthem did not go down well. The hour of singing Christmas carols was hilarious. But any policeman reading this. Why? Why do you need to act the way you do? Stopping young men doing nothing wrong except enjoying themselves? Football fans, victimized. On a side note, met some good lads on the Sunderland train! 5 hour journey, plenty of beer, some good laughs. Enjoy Marseille to those that are going!

Title Contenders?

SAY WE ARE TOP THE LEAGUE, SAY WE ARE TOP THE LEAGUE

We are a title contender. I do not care what the boo boys say. What the press say. We have the best defence in the Premier League and the most creative midfield. When we compare to other Premier League sides, I do not see why we can not win the league. We have a better 1st XI then Manchester United – I also think we have a better squad, and Moyes does not have a clue!; Chelsea are strong, both in 1st XI and squad, but there defeat against Everton shows they are not unbeatable. They could suffer from not having a consistent 1st XI. Manchester City have not gone forward this season. Poor signings in Fernandinho and Navas, and unneeded signings in Negrado and Jovetic. With the likes of David Silva and Sergio Aguero, they will be a threat. But we can compete. As for Liverpool and Spurs. They are of no threat.

We are title contenders. Our players are good enough. We as fans just need to make sure we are the twelve man every game. To cheer the lads to victory.

Arsenal Football Club – 2013/14 Premier League Champions; Why not?

10 Reasons why we will beat Sunderland + Likely starting 11

1.. Well guess the first reason has to be the potential debut of a certain Mr Ozil, the will he wont he saga is made complete by stories he picked up an illness and didn’t train Friday. But even before he has kicked a ball for us he has made grown men act like One Direction fans

2.. Our back 4 and keeper have had an OK start to the season and yet again we will be stretched as Mertesacker is out due to an illness. Vermaelen has travelled, but has been quoted as not quiet ready yet. So expect Sagna to move in the middle and Jenkinson to take his place at right back.

3.. Diaby is still injured, but sadly so is Rosicky (hamstring).

4.. Wilshere and Ramsey seem to of shaken off any knocks from yet another badly timed international break.

5.. Giroud, he must be the most secure player at the club he has zero competition for his place right now with Podolski, The Ox and Sanogo all out injured. Thankfully he also looks in his best form for us.

6.. Sunderland must be bricking it, 1 point from 3 games so far and their Captain suspended.

7.. I Like Di Canio, he wears his heart on his sleeve as a manager as he did as a player, but he has been landed with a side that will struggle this season.

8.. Carzola, I really can’t wait to see him link up with Ozil, those 2 plus Theo could scare the living b’jesus out of anyone in Europe once they all click.

9.. Flamini could really be the key to this season, his experience, tactical nohow and his urge to stick the boot in could really make the difference in tricky away games.

10.. Wenger knows he has put all his eggs in one basket with Ozil this summer, we needed a striker and got a playmaker. But what a playmaker we got eh…

Predicted starting 11 – Chesney, Jenks, Sagna, Kos, Gibbs, Flamini, Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, Giroud, Theooooo
